Southern Pines, N. C. 709 S. W. Broad Street Phone 692-8743 Police Chief Earl Seawell of Southern Pines was elected presi dent of the Moore County Law Enforcement Officers Association last week, with State Trooper Ray Wicker as vice-president. Reelected secretary - treasurer by acclamation was Judge J. C. Farrell of Aberdeen Recorder’s Court, and four new directors were chosen from nine nominees —PoUce Chief Allan Benner of Carthage, State Trooper R. R. Samuels, Constable L. F. Woods of Cameron and Hardy Barber, clog warden, of Carthage, Route 3. They were to take office April 1. The new officers were pictured in last wtek’s Pilot. The association, in its annual dinner meeting at the Southern Pines Coutry Club, also unani mously adopted a resolution en dorsing the candidacy of Moore County’s Cliff Blue for lieuten ant governor—the first such en dorsement ever made by this non partisan, non-political organiza tion. Chief Deputy Sheriff H. H. Grimm, retiring president, presi ding, reported the association’s insurance program to be in good shape, with a reserve fund which he said he would recommend that the new officers employ to pro vide additional benefits for the participants. Only active peace officers may, under the regu lations, avail themselves of the group hospitalization and life in surance program, partly financed by the insureds and partly by $1 in court costs charged in most criminal cases in the county. Clubhouse Progress President Grimm also noted that the clubhouse near Carthage has gotten a good start, with the cookshed partially completed, wired and equipped, the lake dammed and well stocked with fish, and a pier already built. He recommended that the new ad ministration push completion of the project, being built beside the school garage lake, as it would mean a lot to the members not only as recreation but a means of raising funds with cookouts. Judge Farrell, reporting on fi nances, said the club had an ac tive bank balance of $843 on hand in addition to the reserve fund of $1,000 drawing interest at the Aberdeen Savings & Loan. The association’s financial con dition has been helped during the past few months by the candy and coke machines it has installed on the first floor of the court house, which have proven quite Sandhill Firemen Bach Cliff Blue For Lt. Governor Meeting in Pinebluff March 20, the Sandhills Volunteer Firemen’s Association with, some 185 representatives from Virginia to the South Carolina line, voted to endorse House Speaker H. Clif ton Blue of Aberdeen for Lieuten ant Governor. Rep. Blue, a longtime supporter of the Firemen’s Pension Fund legislation, was one of the speak ers on the program. Blue told the group that the Retirement Pen sion Fund Bill has resulted in the formation of needed volunteer fire departments throughout the state which in turn keep property loss and fire insurance rates down. Also speaking on the program was State Insurance Commission er Edwin Lanier who strongly supported the Firemen’s Retire ment Pension Fund legislation. Donald C. Charles, retired Charlotte fire chief, told the group of Blue’s long support of legisla tion in behalf of the firemen and urged the group to support Blue. The motion to endorse Blue, which was unanimously carried, was made by Sim Oxendine of Pembroke. Presiding at the meeting was Henry O’Briant, president of the Association, of Roxboro. Curtis Flannigan, secretary of the State Association of Farmville, gave a report. Major Robert E. Martin of Fort Bragg spoke to the group on civil defense preparedness. Mayor E. H. Mills of Pinebluff and W. K. Carpenter, Jr., chief of the Pinebluff Volunteer Fire De partment, extended greetings to the firemen. All the volunteer fire depart ments in Moore County are mem bers of the association. A delega tion from Southern Pines attend ed the meeting. North Carolina ports are con nected with inland markets with excellent rail and trucking facili ties. Heavy duty cranes and fire proof warehouses help make the port terminals an integral part of commerce and industry.
