SAMUELS DISTILLERY • Editor’s note: This column is an outgrowth of work in Language Arts at East South ern Pines Elementary School. Student reporters are gather ing news from the classroom.^ and writers are preparing it for The Pilot, to be used by this newspaper as space per mits ' Science in First Grade Mrs. Foushee’s class has made a Spring Nature Mural. It is in four areas. The students bring nature items to place in the proper areas. Field Days The firs three grades have had their field days in the gym.nasium with Coach Williams. They did lots of stunts, running and jump ing. The teachers and coach were proud of the results. The work Coach Williams has done with the Elementary School Physical Fitness Program has helped the students to work hard er and exercise better. Second Grade Program On April 17 Mrs. Megginson’s second grade presented a chapel program on three subjects they have studied this year. Poems, songs and paintings were used to show the work that had been done on the Train, Universe and Community Helper units. Spring Bird Study Many of the classes have been studying birds. Bird feeders and houses can be seen in several trees on the grounds. Special bird pudding was made by a second grade. Mrs. McGoogan’s class enjoyed a bird walk through Mrs. Bul lets garden in Knollwood. Some I of the m.others drove the students out in cars. Miss Blue’s fourth grade has been observing with interest a robin family outside their win dow. The students are learning many bird habits through this ex perience. Science News Mrs. Robbins’s second grade is working on a science project. Each one of them has a seed con tainer planted and additional seeds to compare growth in dif ferent conditions. 'They are read ing the life of Luther Burbank and studying some of the plants he made famous. Special Visitors Mrs. J. W. Jenkins came this week and taught an art lesson on drawing trees, flowers and shrubs. On Friday they had a ipecial treat when the grad.e par ents cam.e for lunch. School Visitor Max Rush, manager of a dairy products company visited Mrs. McGoogan’s second grade and Miss Peggy Blue’s third grade re cently. He made an interesting talk about milk and milk cleanli ness. He also brought chocolate milk and cottage cheese which the students enjoyed. Visitors help classroom projects. Bakery Trip Miss Blue’s third grade took a trip to a bakery, after completing a bread study. Mr. Carver, the owner, showed all the machinery and explained how it worked. The class was surprised to see how much food the ovens bake at one time. The gifts of doughnuts and magazines were enjoyed by everyone. Fourlh Grade Studies State Mrs. Jenkins’s class is leiuming about North Carolina. They have studied about Sir Walter Raleigh and John White. They are learn ing the important industries and crops grown in the state and that the Tar Heel State is a “Variety Vacationland.” Nature Walks Recently, Miss Rebecca Blue’s fourth grade enjoyed several walks. They walked on the school grounds, observing insect holes in bark, treoes and the young buds. They collected pine rosin to make studies for their microscopes. An other day, they hiked to W. New Jersey Avenue to observe fallen trees. They were able to see the sapwood, rings of growth, and heartwood. Antiques Exhibit Miss Blue’s class had an an tique exhibit. The class wrote leg ends containing the information tracing the antiques. Many class es and teachers visited the room during the day. Fifth Grade Unit Work Mrs. Frye’s fifth grade is work ing on a seed unit. They started with an individual seed and fol lowed it through the different steps of growth, including plants, flowers, flower parts, and observ ed the work of each. Leaves and twigs will also be studied and their various uses will be explor ed. Soil conservation good prac tices in raising plants at home and on farms will also be discuss ed. Art Lessons and Displays Mrs. Frye’s class had an inter- esting art lesson in abstract de signs. The results were individual and attractive. The cafeteria is nicely decorated with pictures drawn by the students in all grades. This project was encour aged by Mr. Moore, our principal. They make our lunch period more pleasant.
