GILBEY, LTD., CINCINNATI, OHIO Page FIFTEEN TWO GIRLS FROM COUNTY Music Workshop Scholarships Given The Home Demonstration County Council has awarded two scholarships to the State Music Workshop to be conducted by Dr. Arnold Hoffman of the State Mu sic Department, the week of June 15 at the Univ*sity of North Carolina at Greensboro. The scholarships went to Miss Dorothy Caddell of the Holly Grove Home Demonstration Club and Miss Sandra Stanley of the Red Branch 4-H Club. Miss Caddell is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Caddell of Rt. 1, West End. She is a junior in West End High School. She has had four years of piano, has serv ed as club music leader, is a member of high school glee club, has participated in the Music Fes tival, is church and Sunday School pianist and assists with the music for Bible School. Miss Stanley is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Stanley, Route 2, Carthage. She has had guitar lessons, attended local music workshops, is a member of church choir, directs the Junior Church Choir, is a member of high school glee club, participated in the Music Festival, assists with the music for Bible School, is mu sic leader for the Grange and as sists with music for 4-H events. She is a junior in Cameron High School. These girls will assist with county and local home demon stration and 4-H music programs upon their return, said Mrs. Jean M. Hubbard, Moore County home economics agent. Appointments Made To Coaching Staff At Union Pines Consolidated School William C. Walton, principal of the new Union Pines consolidated high school, has reported the fol lowing appointments to the coaching and physical education staff of the school: Bob Ward has been selected as head basketball and baseball coach. He holds an A.B. Degree from Catawba College and has done advanced work at Appalach ian. A native of Thomasville, he has taught at West Davidson since its inception six years ago. His athletic teams have known unusual success finishing as either champions or runner-up for five of the six years. Ward’s career record is outstanding having coached 239 games and won 175 of them. In 1960 he was chosen Conference Coach of the year and was selected to coach the Western All-Stars. At Union Pines he will coach baseball, boy’s basketball, and Eissist in Local People At Raleigh Dinner For N. C. Awards Mr. and Mrs. Haynes Britt and daughter. Miss Ethel Blue Britt, were guests of the Governor of North Carolina and the North Carolina Awards Commission honoring the winners of awards for distinguished achievements in literature, fine arts, science and public service. The dinner and presentation were held in the ballroom of Hotel Sir Walter in Raleigh on Monday. The presentations were made by Gov. Terry Sanford. This event marked the first iiime that the State of North Carolina has thus honored its citizens of distinguished achieve ments. Those honored were: Inglis Fletcher, for creative- achievement in literature; Fran cis Speight, for his genius in painting; Dr. John N. Couch, for research in the field of science and its resulting contribution to the welfare of mankind; Dr. Clar ence Poe, for preeminent accom plishments in public service through journalism, and the well- known John Motley Morehead, for the magnitude of his service in the fields of science, business and public service. Following these ceremonies, a reception was held by Governor and Mrs. Sanford at the Gover nor’s mansion. Three hundred and fifty invitations were sent out and 350 persons attended. football. John Crenshaw has been desig nated head football coach at Union Pines. He will also coach the girl’s varsity basketball and head the track program. Cren shaw was graduated from Gufil- ford College and has a Masters Degree from the University of North Carolina. A native of Blackstone, Virginia, he has taught in the Aberdeen Schools for the past five years. At Aber deen his teams have shown re markable success - last year go ing into the state finals. Jene Bowen will assist in foot ball, head the junior varsity bas ketball program, and coach ten nis and golf. Mr. Bowen holds both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree from East Carolina Col lege. He has taught and coached at Elise High School for the past four years. Miss Lillian Smith, who will graduate from Appalachian State Teachers College this spring, will be the girls physical education instructor. She will assist in the junior varsity program and will travel with the girls teams. 8th Grade Class Does Projects With Electricity The students of Mrs. Thomp son’s eighth grade science class at East Southern Pines School have had a sizzling and shocking time—they have made, studied and experimented with their electrical projects. Some of the projects were telephones, elec trical circuits, magnetic toys, mo tors and a tube tester. Those who did not have a project made pos ters and did research on scien tists in this field. The Junior High parents and faculty exhibited much enthusiasm and interest. To make learning about elec tricity more interesting, field trips were made to the United Telephone Equipment Building, Southern National Bank, and to the Coca-Cola Bottling Company. The members of the class are: Ray Williams, Brenda Stevenson, Wallace Gardner, Lanny Johnson, Karen Morris, Joey Rowell, Gary Brooks, Kay Honeycutt, l^eddy Atkins, Elaine Pope, Roger Mar tin, Bobby Harrison. Also: Danny Page, Calvin At kins, Mike Bettini, Steve Frazier, Bobby Furr, Madelon Kerns, Jul ia McCrimmon, Grace Richards, Marilyn Gantt, Patsy Talbert, Miller Barnes, and Joel Kim.ball. Academy Heights Exercises Held Graduation exercises were held in the auditorium of the Academy Heights School Wednesday at 8:15 p. m.
