Cultivate Reading, Get Knowledge, By HOLLIS HANEY Director, Sandhills Regional Library Spring is everyone’s favorite season, probably because it has moods for everyone. Spring is clean-up, paint-up time. Spring is for plantijig and for coaxing buds into blossom. Spring is the resounding call, “Play ball!” that echoes from backyard to major league training farms. Spring is the time of the year that encourages us to bring its freshness and vitality inside our homes, inside our minds. It can also be a time for reflection and self-evaluation, prompted by the new life of the season. Spring Fever Lulls If you’re interested in planting a garden, redecorating your home, helping “clean-up” or “paint-up” a neighborhood, your librarian and staff will furnish reading material to make any of these activities more interesting, more fun. Turn the spring fever lull to inspired vigor. Green Thumb? All of us ' have a desire to create something beautiful, and one way to do it is by working in the soil. If you are not already a gardener, why not consider be coming one? Let your library in vite you to consider gardening as a hobby and offer to loan you good gardening books as a re ward for your efforts. For pleasure read E.T.H. Wchaffer’s book CAROLINA GARDENS: all about South and North Carolina gardens and plan tations. Also a new book added to the Moore County Library is GARDENS AND PEOPLE by Fletcher Steele. . . most delight ful. This is a book about land scape, nature, gardens and the people who enjoy them . . . GARDENING WITHOUT POI SONS is a book by B. T. Hunter, a constructive answer to the pes ticide problem. R. D. Meikies GARDEN FLOWERS is a brand new Key Series which should serve as a useful guide to those who would like to grow some thing “different” in their gardens. Zing Into Spring Books on personal growth and self-improvement include those on vocational opportunities, (VO CATIONS IN BIOGRAPHY AND FICTION, (Haebich); wardrobe (THE BISHOP METHOD OF CLOTHING CONSTRUCTION by Edna Bishop); appearance (ALICE BELL’S CHARM BOOK; Genevieve Antonine Dariaux’s ELEGANCE ); and others. Cultivate Reading Your own program of personal growth and improvement can be renewed as you accept your li brary’s seasonal challenge; “Cul tivate reading: Grow in know ledge.” Your library’s books and magazines can help you enjoy your present interest, or sprout new ones. After winter’s drab ness, it’s time to enjoy life, to swing into spring with books from your library.
