(Humphrey photo) BANQUET. AWARDS END SUCCESSFUL SEASON Sandhills Bowlerettes Celebrate BY PAT WILLCOX The Sandhills Bowlerettes have, in years gone by, held' their annual banquets and awarded trophies to the winning teams and individual high scoring bowlers with a taste of purely local triumph. This year was different. The trophies were for league stand ings, but the league had had a taste of triumph, of bowling well done in the state tournament at Greensboro. The great Phyllis Luttrell had finished in the money in the all-events at Greensr boro and Judy Cameron had caught fire and bowled a 263 for high game at the state tourna ment. Mrs. Luttrell and Miss Cameron were not the only Bowlerettes who went to Greensboro. The League sent a team representing the league as a whole. Two other teams, Carolina Bank of Aber deen and the Midland Farms Trottets had also gone and bowl ed very creditably. Martha Callo way, who is also president of the Southern Pines Women’s Bowling Association, had been elected to the board of directors of the North Carolina Women’s Bowling Association for a three- year term. For a group who had never sent a league team to a state bowling tournament before, these were heady items. A feeling of “well done!” filled the banquet room at the Holiday Inn recently. Bowlers who couldn’t touch the scores of a Luttrell or a Cameron took unto theroselves a feeling of personal triumph in the performances of League mates. When the trophies for first place were awarded to the winning team sponsored by Park and Eat . . . the League members recognized the award by long applause. The hard bow ling Snackettes had been spear headed by consistently good bowling of Judy Cameron who had represented each member of the league in her performance at the state tournament. The awards for the team in second place went to Carolina Soap and Candle, a team that fought and held on to its rating despite the fact that its top bowl er, Audrey Davis, had to leave at the beginning of the trotting season. Mrs. Davis is one of the top trotting horse trainers in the country. In the comparison of statistics OTRONCEST pickup in the y-i Tough new double-sidewall box, a tailgate that can take a ton! THURSDAY, JUNE 11, 1964 it is interesting to note that every member of the Carolina Soap and Candle team is listed as having bowled in the 500 series and has one or mpre 200 games to her credit. Dorothy McCrimmon, who re ceived the trophy for the most improved bowler of the year, turned in her most spectacular performance while bowling in a mixed league. Mrs. McCrim mon, holding a 132 average in the mixed league, threw a 242 for a game that is 110 points above her average. She will re ceive a patch from the Women’s International Bowling Congress for her stellar performance. Prizes for new categories were initiated this year. The results were tabulated! from the secret ballots of the league member ship. Dib Taylor received the trophy for Best Sport; Phyllis Luttrell for the most dependable bowler; Gladys McCarthy took home the gifts that said she was the friendliest bowler. New officers were elected: Irma Herendeen of Southern Pines is the incoming president. Judy Cameron, Pinehurst, will be the new vice-president. Kendra Mann, Southern Pines, is the in coming secretary-treasurer. The meeting was adjourned after a standing ovation for Bon nie Quesenberry and' Martha Calloway who had spent so much time and work in making this year’s banquet so interesting that the league members were reluct ant to say good night. retirement I . • - - - living the SOUTHERN PINES north Carolina Try it out-see if you like it-In Southern Pines, North Carolina, at the famous Hollywood.
