Also there are his son, Tommy, who is recovering well following knee surgery last week, and his mother, Mrs. Ernest Wil son, who has been hospitalized for three weeks. Midland Road Pinehurst ■ Legion Post At West End Places Wreath, 85 Flags The McDuffie Post of the American Legion at West End observed Memorial Day by plac ing a wreath with 250 poppies on the Memorial Marker in West End Cemetery. Members of the post and its Auxiliary also placed 85 flags on graves in the West End, Marcus, Jackson Springs, Eagle Springs and Pleasant Hill Cemeteries. Jane Cheney and Miss Wilkinson left Tuesday for a vacation at Montreat. Also visiting the Cheneys for the week end were Mr. and Mrs. Jim Pugh with Gwyn and Jimmie of Ash land, Va. Bess Cheney returned home with her sister, Mrs. James N. White, on Friday to Newark, N. J. 1 The racing car owned by Mr. I and Mrs. Roscoe Rushing won 1st place in the Sportsmans race Saturday night at the Biscoe Speedway. This was in competi- a': tion with 10 cars, with Troy Ed wards driving the Rushing car. Joe Monroe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Reece Monroe of Eagle Springs, who graduated this term from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will enter the School of Law in the fall also at UNC. Kenneth Greene and Gary Rushing are attending summer school at Pembroke State Col lege. Jesse Joyce, who is stationed with the United States Navy in Norfolk, Va. spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Joyce. Dodge 'T Captain John S. Ruggles, son of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Ruggles of Southern Pines, has been assign ed as assistant maintenance offi cer in the G-4 section at Head quarters VIII U. S. Army Corps, Austin, Tex. A graduate of Southern Pines High School, he attended the United States Naval Academy be fore entering the Army in Sep tember, 1952. He graduated from the Officer Candidate and Artil lery and Guided Missile Schools, Fort Sill, Okla., and has served in the Far East and Europe. He was previously stationed at Beau mont, Tex., where he was an ar tillery advisor to the 90th Infan try Division. Captain and Mrs. Ruggles and their daughter. Daphne, live at 4705 Round Up Trail, Austin, Tex. Francis L. Overby, radioman third class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Overby of Route 1, Jackson Springs, is serving aboard the Navy tank landing ship USS Waldo County opera ting out of Norfolk, Va. Waldo County is part of Am phibious Squadron Eight, a unit of the U. S. Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. She is a unit of the large Med iterranean combat ready force that is a constant reminder to any potential aggressor of America’s determination to keep the peace. McGal- liard, whose wife Ursula, lives on Route 2, Cameron, has been as signed to Company B, 8th Special Forces Group, 1st Special Forces, Fort Gulick, Canal Zone, May 29 Special Forces were created oy the Department of the Army to provide, in time of war, a unit through which the Army can de velop and employ guerrilla war fare forces against the enemy in support of military operations. ergeant McGalliard, a radio operator in the company, enter ed the Army in September, 1951, and was last stationed at Fort Bragg. The sergeant, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sanford G. McGaillard of Alexander, is a 1950 graduate of Red Oak High School, Alexander. Sgt. Ernest Purnsley of South ern Pines, who is with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, has been awarded the EIB Medal. Of 250 Airborne soldiers who took the test, he was one of six to complete it successfully, ac cording to information furnished to The Pilot. Sergeant Purnsley has also been appointed Education and Safety NCO director for the 1st Battalion, 504 Infantry. A native of Wilmington, Del., he is married to the former Juani ta Lowe of Southern Pines, oper ating Purnsley’s Guest House here. His wife is an instructor in [the Rockingham schools.
