As of September 3, employees whose work was brought under the Act’s coverage by the 1961 amendments are entitled to a minimum wage of $1.15 an hour, instead of $1 an hour. The maxi mum workweek, after which they must be paid at the rate of one and one-half times their reg ular rate of pay on September 3, is 42 hours a week, replacing the 44-hour workweek. Employees whose work was covered by the Act prior to 1961 continue to be subject to a mini mum wage of $1.25 an hour and overtime pay alter 40 hours a week. Employers and workers are re minded of another provision of the law which became effective last June. The Equal Pay Act of 1963, which amended the Fair Labor Standards Act, prohibits wage discrimination on the basis of sex. It applies to employers and employees who are subject to the minimum wage provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Additional information is avail able from the U. S. A com prehensive program of instruc tion is offered in the sciences, technical fields and related areas to prepare graduates for employ ment in the field. The type of education given is designed to enable graduates to become productive immediately upon entering industry. It is ex pected that only a minimum of on-the-job training will be nec essary to make them useful to employers. Students are prepared for technician jobs by courses in applied science, applied mathe matics, and applied engineering, with subject matter related to the practical problems students will face on the job. Technician, Not Craftsman Students are also taught basic skills in the use of instruments, machinery and tools. This train ing, however, is designed to fa miliarize the student with equip ment, rather than to develop manual skill. In contrast with the skilled craftsman whose job depends primarily upon manipu lative ability, a technician often uses instruments and machinery merely as an aid in applying his scientific knowledge to a partic ular problem. The program in Mechanical Technology is actually composed of two courses: Industrial Tech nology, which deals with produc tion methods, material handling, general production efficiency, and time and motion study; and Manufactuuring Engineering, which entails tooling, process, tool design, inspection and pro duction planning. While engaged in the program, the student will learn the functions and capabili ties of modern machine tools, and the latest manufacturing tech nique, by actual practice on su pervised projects. Upon completing either of the two courses in the program, the student will be qualified to enter the industrial field as an indus trial technician, or a junior man ufacturing engineer. Skeldon Heads Program The Mechanical Technology program is headed by William Skeldon, a manufacturing engi- neer with over 20 years in indus- try, in the Toledo-Detroit Area. His background has been in the aircraft, automotive, and ma chine tool fields, and includes tooling and computer program work for numerical control ma chine tools. Earnings in either field of Mechanical Technology are very much above average, says the announcement of the course. Starting salaries range from $350 to $400 per month. As ability in creases with experience, the status of industrial engineer, or or senior manufacturing engineer is reached; either of these classi fications will have a salary scale or executive field. The requirements for entry to the Mechanical Technology pro of $600 to $700 per month and | gram are graduation from high from either of these positions, school, preferably after a science- the door is open to the consulting | mathematics emphasis. Testing is is provided for those who do not meet the formal requirements, and preliminary courses are of fered to prepare the candidate for entry to the mechanical tech nology curriculum.
