Southern Pines Agriculture-Business Course Given At Lee Center Offers Opportunities The two year agricultural tech nology business course offered by the Lee County Industrial Ed ucation Center at Sanford, is de signed to give the student a thorough understanding of busi ness principles and procedures as they relate to agricultural pro ducts, services and supplies. An advisory committee from production agriculture, education, and business helped to set up the curriculum in order that the stu dent would have a broad cover age in subject matter and be qualified to enter a number of different types of business organ izations. The course is well bal anced with study in human be havior, business techniques and basic agriculture procedures. In classrooms, containing busi ness machines, the student be comes familiar with procedures in accounting, record keeping and budget making. In laboratory fa cilities, including a greenhouse, the student learns agriculture as it is being practiced today. Through selected field trips, mod ern agriculture and businesses are viewed by the student. With the trend to more auto mation all businesses are seeking men and women who have skills acquired in study beyond the high school. For those who want inside work, the chain stores offer employment in such areas as pro duce department, dairy and egg 'Section and meat market mana gers. Farm, seed, fertilizer and supply stores need young men who are willing to assume man agerial responsibilities. Large farm operators are seek ing farm managers and herds men. Agricultural credit and fi nancial concerns are seeking per sons who are qualified as serv icing agents for loans, appraisals sales, servicing, processing and credit reports. Positions in marketing agricultural products are readily available to those persons who qualify. North Carolina has the capa bilities for feeding a large part of the eastern half of the United States. This is due partly to its location (within one-day trucking distance of more than 90 million people). The climate in the Tar Heel State is, ideally suited for truck and field crops. However, agriculture is more than just farming. The trend is for less people to be involved in the ac tual raising of farm products (often referred to as production agriculture) with more trained and skilled workers required in the handling, processing, sales, and distribution of the farm pro ducts.
