IN CONNECTION WITH MANEUVERS Blank Ammunition Danger Explained Officials of the Army exercise Hawk Blade and Air Assault II to be conducted in the Carolinas October through mid November are advising the civilian popu lace of possible danger from blank ammunition. KEEP UP WITH LATE VALUES IN PILOT ADS The exercise area includes the Uwharrie National Forest, which extends into the northwestern part of Moore County and where the Cherokee Trail IV Special Warfare maneuver will be con ducted simultaneously. Any explosive device or blank ammunition found in the area should be reported to the local police. Special Army units will then recover these items. The purpose of these exercises is to determine whether ad vances in light aircraft capabili ties and new technology can be employed to improve the battle field mobility and combat ef fectiveness of US ground forces. “While there will be no live firing during the exercises, num erous types of blank ammunition and explosive devices to include artillery simulators, pyrotechnics and firecrackers will be used,” exercise officials said. All troops have been trained to keep close control of such ammuniltion, but there is always a possibility that some unfired item may not be recovered. “These items can be particu larly dangerous at close range and should be left alone if found.
