3 Young Men Fined For Attempt To
Steal $600 Boat From Carthage Man

MOORE COUNTY'S LEADING
NEWS WEEKLY.
Three young Pope Air Force
Base airmen, charged with at
tempting to steal a boat valued at
$600, and malicious damage to
personal property, drew 60 days
each in Moore Recorder’s Court
at .Carthage, Monday, suspended
on payment of $325 and costs.
Out of the fine. Judge J. Vance
Rowe directed the clerk to pay
Curt Luther of Carthage $125 to
cover damage to his boat.
While the defendants Earl
Wiser, 18, and Randy Kohn, 21,
and Jay Gruber, 22 (charged
with aiding and abetting) did not
testify, Carthage Police Officer
John McDonald read excerpts
from their police statements.
These indicated that Wiser had
been the ringleader in the pro
ject, recruiting his buddies to
help steal Luther’s boat late in
the night of August 13.
Wiser, who had been dating a
Carthage girl, had seen the boat
at Luther’s place and secured the
aid of Grubber and Kohn. While
Gruber engaged Night Police
man Paul Lamm in conversation
near the courthouse, Wiser and
Kohn tried to loosen the boat
from its holder but succeeded
only in damaging it. Later, on
hearing someone (Lamm) ap
proach, they fled and Gruber, in
the car, could not find them. All
made their way back separately
to Pope, where they were later
arrested with the help of Army
authorities. In court, they plead
ed guilty to trespass and mali
cious damage.
