Page TWENTY WEST END NEWS BY SALLY AUMAN At Raleigh Meeting Lions Billy McKenzie and Harold Wood reported to the Club Thursday evening on the Bond Issue for education, to be voted on by North Carolinians in the forthcoming election. These Lions, along with Lynn Martin of Eagle Springs, T. J. Baldwin and Clyde Auman, attended the Thursday morning meeting in Raleigh and they were prepared to pass the information on to their fellow Lions. Lions Club News Lions Billy McKenzie, Leslie Gr)rdon, and T. J. Baldwin, mem bers of the Club’s Finance Com mittee, have the community birthday calendar underway. The team captains are Earl Auman, Roy Swaringen and W. A. John son, Jr. with Leslie Gordon chair- tp man of the Advertising Com mittee. A picture of the school faculty will be on the calendar and the dead line for the canvass will be October 15. The Lion’s Finance Committee has also distributed Hallowe’en Candy to its club members to be sold for Trick or Treat. The candy is made by the Old' Dominion Candy Company of Virginia ex clusively for Lion’s Clubs, and is of the highest quality. Lion McKenzie announces that Teel Williams, vice-president in charge of sales, of the Sandhill Furniture Corporation, will be the speaker at the next meeting on October 15. Mr. Williams is a much sought after speaker, hav ing spoken this week to the Seniors in the School of Forestry at the Faculty Club at the North Carolina State College. The Local Lions Club is parti cipating in the county glaucoma detection clinic, to be held Octo ber 15 at the Armory in Southern Pines. This disease, if diagnosed in time, can be arrested. Flooded News has been received here that the Paul L. VonCanon Furni ture Plant at Whittier has been flooded by the rainstorm of the weekend. Mrs. M. C. McDonald, Jr. was visiting the Chris Mc Donalds in Sylva for the weekend and, on Monday, was unable to return home. Visitors It is unusual that two West End High School graduates are Assistant Home Economics Agents in Wake County—Miss Vivian Tucker and Mrs. Guy Walker, who was the former Miss Earline Martin. Mr. and Mrs. Walker were weekend guests of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Mar tin of Eagle Springs. Tickets For Ballet Mrs. Harold Wood has tickets for sale for the performance of the North Carolina State Ballet Company in Pinehurst, October 18, at 8:30 in the evening. An afternoon performance will be given for school students free of charge provided adult tickets are sold in the community. High Salesman High School Junior Linda Free man was high salesman in the magazine subscription campaign, with sales of $167.19, Judy Hart- sell placed second, with sales of $73.84. The class project came to a successful close last week with total sales of $737.54. Linda also was the lucky win ner of a radio for selling certain combination subscriptions. Brenda Graham of Miss Mc Leod’s section was captain of the highest salesmanship section and she received the “traveling prize’’ Mr. Football.” Friday was a memorable day for the junior class, they placed orders for class rings. FTA Officers Linda Williams was elected president of the Future Teachers of America Club this week at the school. Elected to serve with her were vice-president, Vernon Sut- phin; secretary, Diane Williams; treasurer, Sandra Hartsell; his torian, Dorothy Caddell; reporter, Jane Jackson. HD Club News Mrs. Woodrow Mclnnis was hostess to the Holly Grove Home Demonstration Club this week. Mrs. Velma Currie presided and gave a devotional. Mrs. Jean Hubbard presented a program on “Furniture Styles,” using charts to illustrate Tradi tional, Provincial and Contem porary.
