ELECTION NOTES Jackson Called Shots Close In Top Races; Oddities Seen In Precinct Vote Some notes on the November 3 election in Moore: J. Elvin Jackson, Moore Coun ty Democratic chairman, went on record the week before the elec tion with a prediction of 12,000 votes to be cast, with 6250 for President Johnson versus 5750 for Senator Goldwater; 6400 for Dan Moore, versus 5600 for Rob ert Gavin. He wasn’t far wrong, though even he did not foresee the ex tent of the Democratic sweep, not only in this county but the State and nation. Hardly any body did. Democrats testing the atmosphere found' it favorable, but toned down their optimism for fear of a fall. Republicans gave no sign of sensing defeat, much less disaster. In Moore, the vote of some 11, 500 was a bit smaller than the chairman foresaw, but his esti mates compared well with the actual totals of 6363 for Johnson for presidtent, 5162 for Gold- water; and 5694 for Moore for governor and for Gavin. 833 Ahead In the county race seen as most critical, Clyde Auman against Robert S. Ewing for the House, Jackson’s prediction that Democrat Auman would squeeze by with “at least 150 to 200 votes” was too conservative. Even Auman admitted his sur prise, and deep gratification, at the decisive 5999-vote total—833 ahead of Ewing, who had' 5166. Johnson Takes 14 Auman led in 12 of the 19 pre cincts, while President Johnson led in 14. Hightails and Pine- huiist boljh gave majorities to Johnson (Pinehurst by just six votes) while voting for Ewing for the House. While unprecedented ticket splitting was predicted by both sides, this did not materialize to 'A WORSHAM'S FINEST IN FOODS STRICTLY FRESH TURKEYS PLACE YOUH ORDER NOW FOR THE SIZE YOU WISH WE ALSO WILL HAVE -- Capons, Ducks, Squab And Cornish Hens FRESH — SMOKED — I COUNTRY CURED HAMS Lamb, Chops, Legs, Roast Choke Western Beef, All Cuts Plus All of Your Thanksgiving Trimmings WE WISH YOU A HAPPY HOLIDAY the extent foreseen, and the re sults: showed traditional patterns to have been mainly followed throughout the county, with many voting straight tickets as usual. All Republican Though the predicted Demo cratic sweep came true as far as all the county totals were con-, cerned (except in the congres sional race) four precincts as usual voted Republican all the way—Bensalem, Ritters, Rob bins and Westmoore. Democratic all the way, were Aberdeen, Cameron, East Car thage, West Carthage, Deep Riv er, Eureka, Little River, Pine- bluff, South Southern Pines, Vass and West End, with North Southern Pines voting Demo cratic except for the congres sional race. Three Tie Votes Highfalls, Pinedene and Pine hurst were pretty mixed' up, with Highfalls running so close it produced three tie votes—127 for Gill and Mitchell in the State vote, 124 for Matthews and Phil lips and 123 for McKeithen and Thompson, for county board of education. Highfalls gave Johnson 140 votes to 126 for Goldwater, then voted for Gavin over Moore by 142 to 128. It gave Scott 134 votes to 125 for Bell, indicating that eight voters wanted a Re publican governor with Demo cratic lieutenant governor. It went for Gilmore and Morgan for the Senate, but in other races voted Republican. Pinedene Results Pinedene went Republican for president, governor and lieuten ant governor. Congress and the House, Democratic for Council of State, county commissioners and board of education. Pine hurst gave Johnson a narrow edge (439 to 433) over Gold- water, then handed Gavin a thumping 607 to 361 for gover nor. Voting for Republicans for lieutenant governor. Congress and the House, it wanted Dem ocrats in all other races. The votes for governor and Sou. The size and spirit of the crowd was overwhelming and it was discovered later that mingled in with the Blue Knight supporters were former students and acquaintances of Coach Trentini, who coached at the Wake Forest High School for lieutenant governor varied from a little to a lot in each precinct, indicating that a good many voters wanted a Democratic gov ernor with Republican lieuten ant governor, or vice versa. Scott turned out in general to be more popular than Moore, by 447 votes, as Moore won 5964, Scott 6411. School Bond Vote On the school bond vote, 17 precincts favored* it heavily, with only Bensalem and West moore turning it down, generally on partisan lines. These strong Republican precincts, however'^ both did better for the bonds than they did' for the Democrats. The totals—7623 for the bonds, 3580 against them.
