Philip Tilley, Fuquay Springs, was successful high bidder on 7,- 362 tons of pine sawtimber at $35,58.46. Farm Production Expenses Rise PILOT ADVERTISING PAYS STAR - VIEW DRIVE-IN THEATRE CHILDREN UNDER 12 FREE FRI. - SAT. - SUN. JAN. 15 - 16 - 17 Law of the Lawless Dale Robertson William Bendix Color U.S. Highway No. 1 Between Southern Pines & Aberdeen Most farm production expenses are expected to inch up again in 1965, just as they did in 1964. Some expenses may decline slightly, others stay about the same, but the overall trend will be up. This is the prediction offered by D. G. Harwood Jr., an exten sion economist at North Carolina State. Harwood says farmers spent about $29.5 billion in 1964 on pro duction expenses, an increase of about 1 per cent over 1963. The increase came about because of higher prices and larger pur chases. A leading factor in the rise was the higher farm wage rate, which has now reached 92 cents per hour, 2 per cent more than a year ago. And wages are rising faster in the South Atlantic re gion than in the nation as a whole. The increase this year has been 6 cents per hour in the South as compared with 2 to 3 cents in the remainder of the na tion. Machinery Prices Rise and equipment also increased 2 per cent in 1964. Harwood ex pects machinery prices to rise further in 1965. Harwood believes fertilizfer prices will remain stable in 1965, just as they have been for the past decade. He does expect farmers to use more high-analy sis nitrogen materials, which cost less per pound of nitrogen. Feed grain prices may average a little higher in the coming year than they have in 1963-64. Sup plies are down and loan rates are higher, which will add strength to feed grain prices. High protein feed supplies are up about 3 per cent, however, which could cause the price of soybean meal to drop below the level of the last two years. Feed Or Cattle Prices paid for all feeder and replacement livestock from July to October 1964 rose about 5 per cent above spring prices, yet were below those of a year earli er. Prices of feeder cattle are ex pected to remain about the same through mid-year. Strong pig prices are expected through the coming winter be cause of the reduced supply of pigs and increased slaughter hog prices. Harwood says taxes on farm real estate and farm personal property have been rising stead ily. State and local taxes, he said, are expected to cpntinue to rise to meet the revenue require ments, especially for schools. Interest rates have been stable for the past year. Little change is expected in the coming year. Demand For Land Farm real estate values climb ed another 10 per cent in the Southeast during 1964. Demand for land continues strong, which means that another increase can be expected in 1965. JANUARY 28 Clarendon Gardens Nursery Linden Road Pinehurst, N.
