Southern Pines Soil Tests Help Farmers Get Full Benefit From Fertilizer Investment PILOT ADVERTISING PAYS Soil tests can help Moore County farmers who may not be getting the full benefits from money invested in fertilizer, says County Extension Chairman, F. D. Allen. The need for lime cannot be determined by field observation, but is readily determined by a soil test. If your soil is acid, the phosphate may be tied up with iron and aluminum and not be available to the crop. Potash is retained longer in nearly neutral soils than in acid soils. The lighter sandy soils of this area do not have the capaci ty to hold much potash nad if the soil “pH” is low this capacity is reduced even more; therefore, much of the potash bought and put on the crop is lost by leach ing. Allen cautions that too much lime can reduce the availability of minor elements and that fields should not be limed until the soil is tested to see if lime is needed and how much. Farmers can also benefit from learning the proper fertilizer ra- RCA Victor BIG. BRIGHT COLOR ti n RChMKmMwHstd COLOR TV Famous RCA Victor New Vista All-Channel TV at a low, low price. The amount of nutrients already present in the soil and crop to toe grown must toe considered when determining th*e proper fer tilizer ration. For example, if soil tests high in phosphate and low in potash, you would usually use a 1-1-2 ratio such as 6-6-12 for com. Higher rates of potash and ample nitrogen enables you to get the benefit of the phosphate already present. In situations like this, it would be wiser to invest more of your fertilizer dollars in potash than phosphate, says the agricultural agent. If a soil contains more potash than phosphate it would be bet ter to use fertilizer ratios with more phosphate or apply enough superphosphate to raise the phosphate content to the desired level. A soil test lets you know which ration is best for the soil. Many farmers keep their soil test reports in a permanent file so they can keep a close watch on the fertility level and yields obtained. This enables each farm er to accurately determine the kind and amount of fertilizer that makes more profit on his particular soil. Soil sample boxes and samp ling instructions are available at the county extension office in the Agricultural Building at Car thage, for anyone who wants to learn what nutrients his soil al ready has and what it needs to produce profitable yields. Dr. Cameron Of UNC Wins Award Of Fellowship Dr. Edward A. Cameron, pro fessor of mathematics at the Uni versity of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, has been awarded a science faculty fellowship by the Nation al Science Foundation. Dr. Cameron is a son of the late Alexander and Estelle Mc Millan Cameron, of Manly, and is a graduate of Southern Pines High School. A brother, Ray mond Cameron, is a local resi dent and he has several cousins and other relatives in the Sand hills. The fellowship will enable Dr. Cameron to study and conduct an independent research project in modem abstract algebra at Harvard University during the academic year beginning Sept. 1. The ward, granted by the NSF to support advanced research ac tivities, is designed to improve the teaching of science, math, and engineering in colleges and uni versities. Dr. Cameron has been on the UNC faculty since 1929. He re ceived his doctorate there in 1936. Reparation Made By Moore Man In Produce Claim The U. S. Department of Agri culture, from its southeast area office at Atlanta, Ga., reports that William H. Dickerson of Jackson Springs has satisfied a reparation award issued under the 'Perishable Agriculjturte Commodities Act. USDA’s Agricultural Market ing Service said the award was based upon the failure of Dicker- son, doing business as Dick’s Pro duce Co., to pay Stanly Produce Company, Columbia, S. C., for mixed vegetables purchased in interstate commerce; Stanly Pro duce company had previously registered a complaint under the PAC Act with the Agricultural Marketing Service. Now that the reparation award has been satisfied, the Agricul tural Marketing Service said Dickerson will be entitled to con duct business subject to the PAC Act as soon as he obtains a New PAC license. His PACA license terminated before the order was issued, the Agricultural Market ing Service said. The PAC Act establishes a code of good business conduct for the produce industry. As a means of enforcing that code, it requires that interstate traders in fresh and frozen fmits and vegetables be licensed. The law authorizes the Agricultural Mar keting Service to suspend or re voke a trader’s license for viola ting the Act. PILOT ADVERTISING PAYS SEE! COLLEGE FOOTBALL IN COLOR TOO!
