SCOUT WEEK PROJECT— As a feature of
National Boy Scout Week which began Sunday,
members of local Troop 873, sponsored by St.
Anthony’s Church, took part Wednesday night
in a signaling project, under direction of their
Scoutmaster, David A. Drexel. Clockwise from
left, the boys, pictured in the N. C. Forest Ser
vice “fire tower” off Morganton Road, are;
Robin Smith, Don Westbrook, Dana Weldon,
Jimmy Reilly and Jerry Hurst. The signalling
apparatus, an auto headlight and' battery, with
buzzer, for sending code light signals, is in the
background. Equipment in foreground is per
manent Forest Service equipment in the tower.
The plan was for the local Sandhills District
Scouts to attempt to signal back and forth with
a group of Yadkin Trail District Scouts in the
Carthage fire tower, but a check showed that
the Yadkin Trail group for some reason was
not at the Carthage tower Wednesday night.
However, the local boys practiced their signals
with members of their own troop stationed near
the armory, across Morganton Road. The pro
ject was designed to see whether the Scouts
would' be able to communicate with the county
seat about 10 miles away, in case of an emerg
ency that prevented other means of communica
tion. Signaling is the Scouting theme for
February. (Humphrey photo)

A story about Moore County’s
growth and progress in 1964,
which appeared in the Pilot of
December 31, has been reprinted
in a four-page brochure for dis
tribution as advertising for the
county and the Sandhills area.
Sponsoring the printing of
5,000 copies are the Southern
Pines office of the Southern Na
tional Bank and Clarendon Gar
dens and Nursery, of Pinehurst.
The brochure will be distribut
ed to hotels and motels of this
area, where visitors can pick
them up. It will be available at
the Southern Pines Information
Center or can be obtained at the
local bank or at Clarendon Gar
dens. Distribution probably will
also be made to other public
places where it might draw the
attention of visitors.
The reprinting project origi
nated when Francis W. Howe,
owner and operator of Clarendon
Gardens, read The Pilot item and
was so impressed he said, by the
summary of 1964’s growth and
progress in industry, business,
medical care, recreation and
other fields of activity, that he
wished persons outside the area
might have an opportunity to see
it.
The new brochure, which was
printed this week by The Pilot’s
job shop, is headed “One Year
in Moore County, N. C.—A Re
view of Well Balanced Growth.”
The newspaper-type headline
over the reprinted story reads,
“Progress On March In Sandhills
And Moore County, 1964.”
Mr. Howe said he hopes that
residents of this area getting cop
ies of the brochure will send them
out of the state to persons who
might be interested in knowing
more about Moore County and
the Sandhills.
Lovely unfurnished four bedroom, four balh house,
living room, dining room, kitchen, panelled den with
fireplace, playroom, 2 car garage, $45,000.
F6r Rent: Small three bedroom unfurnished house on

Also recently. Congressman
