CHARLES CAMERON WSCS Circle 2 Meets The February meeting of Cir cle 2, was held Thursday eve ning, February 4, in the Meth odist Church Fellowship hall. Mrs. Charles Cameron, presi dent, presided at the meeting. A study of Genesis, using the topic, “The Bible and the Life Within,” was concluded by Mrs. Cameron, assisted by Mrs. Horace Mullinix, and Mrs. James Hudson. A social hour with refreshments follow ed the program. Birthday Party Little Miss Lynn Womble cel ebrated her fifth birthday with a party at the home of her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Womble, Saturday afternooiV. Following a game period, her mother served birthday cake, ice cream and gave out favors of par ty hats and blow-outs to the 12 guests present. Home From Tour 3|c Petty Officer Bobby Fowler arrived home Saturday following a three-year tour of duty with the Navy, assigned to the destroy er, USS Terry. Bobby, whose parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Selby reside in Aberdeen, is mar ried to the former Brenda Hold er. Newcomers The The Rev. and Mrs. Jim Catter, who are Texas natives, moved last week from Virginia, into the mobile home owned by Mr. and Mrs. Baxter Prevatte near their home. Pink-Blue Shower Mrs. Dougald Cameron and Mrs. Lane Bullock were co-host esses at a pink and blue shower honoring Mrs. Dallas Mofield, Jr., at Mrs. Bullock’s home Saturday evening. Games were directed by Mrs. Bullock, with prizes going to Mrs. Preston Boggs, Mrs. Larry Rice and Mrs. John Hipp. Mrs. Bobby Ivey won the door prize. From the gift table centered with a pink and white decorated umbrella, the many dainty gifts were presented to the honoree. The color motif was used on the refreshment (table, from which coffee, cake squares and potato chips were served, buffet style, to the 14 guests present. Out-of- town guests were Mrs. Della Mo field, Sr. and Mrs. James Bry ant of Route 1, Carthage, and Mrs. Eugene Mofield of Southern Pines. Attends Conference Attending the Sanford District Conference at the First Metho dist Church in Rockingham Sun day afternoon were the Rev. and Mrs. Charles Wooten, Edd Finch, Mrs. Charles Gschwind and Miss Ethel Davis. Boy Scout Sunday Community services will be held at the Presbyterian Church Sunday morning in observance of Boy Scout Sunday. The Rev. C. A. Wooten, pastor of the Methodist Church, will bring the message. Top Salesmen The 12 students at Union Pines who sold over $50 each in maga zine subscriptions during the Magazine Contest were accom panied by four of their teachers to Raleigh Saturday evening. As a special treat, they enjoyed sup per at B'allentine’s Restaurant. Later they went to Reynolds Col iseum to see Peter, Paul and Mary. Those from Vass going were Marjorie L. Bullock, Carol Edmis- ten, Ann Thomas and Sandra Southern Pines Recorder's Court Von Metzger. Defeat Southern Pines The Vass-Lakeview Junior High boys and girls’ basketball teams shared dual victories over Southern Pines last Friday. The Blazers claimed victory over the undefeated team in a 21-20 score. Ronnie Springs was the leading scorer in the contest. Personals Mrs. Clyde Vernon Cooper, the former Elizabeth Clayton, is a patient at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. Her room number is 753. Visiting Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Autrey, Sr. were Mr. and Mrs. J Thad Ellis of Bennett on Satur day and on Sunday afternoon, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Alexander and sons, Phillip and Tommy, of Fayetteville. Mr. and Mrs. W. V. Nix left for Yadkinville last Tuesday to be with their daughter, Mrs. Roland Ferguson, and her family. Mrs. Ferguson underwent surgery last week. Visiting the Rev. and Mrs. J. D. Hales, Jr. and daughter. Holly, is Mrs. Hales’s mother, Mrs. Fan nie Lindsey of Pikesville. pHere for the funeral of an aunt, Mrs. Ola Johnson of Cam eron were Mrs. Edd Franklin and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Chilton of Danville, Va. Mrs. Franklin and Mrs. Chilton are sisters of Mrs. H. C. Callahan. Here also was a niece of Mrs. Callahan’s, Mrs. John Ivey and daughter. Penny, of Cheraw, S. C. Mrs. Lula Hennings returned last Monday after spending a few days with her grandchildren, Cheryl and Stevie Hardy, in Washington, D. C. Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Lane Bullock and fam ily were Dr. and Mrs. Russell Tate and sons, Jule and Russ. Mrs. W. R. Wooten of Pikes ville came last weekend for a two week visit with her son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. and Mrs. Charles Wooten and family, and other relatives of Sanford. Home for Sunday dinner with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bax ter Prevatte, and family were Mr. and Mrs. Baxter Prevatte, Jr., and children, of Buies Creek; Mr. and Mrs. Billy Ray Prevatte and family of Sanford; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Morgan and family of Lakeview; and Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Hoyle and children of Charlotte. In the regular Wednesday ses- session of Southern Pines Re corders Court last week, five Ne gro youths who had been arrest ed in West Southern Pines for carrying concealed weapons were sternly lectured by Judge W. Harry Fullenwider on the dangers that .■ using weapons illegally could bring to themselves and to others. He cited the case of the young man who was badly wounded by a pistol in the hand of a companion, earlier last week in West Southern Pines. Because none of the young men had been in court before here, and because members of their families had come to court with them. Judge Fullenwider taxed them with court costs only, after lecturing them on the folly of their actions. All five had been arrested after a complaint from a West South ern Pines place of business that it appeared they were about to make trouble. They had been riding around in a car together and were picked up by local po lice as they were starting to leave town. In the car were found a pistol, an iron bar and a knife, the concealed weapons all five were charged with having. The judge directed that the weapons be destroyed. The defendants, oldest of whom was 21, were: Alphonzo Hargrove of Route 1, West End; Ulice Graham, Jr., of Eastwood; James Curtis Swinnie of Pine hurst; and Quinzell Kimiel and Larry Williams, both of Southern Pines. As no court was held the pre vious week, because of the Su perior Court term in Carthage, the local court had a long docket last week, staying in session until after 3 pm. Following is a summary of the other cases heard: Frank Charles Scott, Hialeah, Fla., unsafe movement resulting in accident, not guilty; Irvin James Tindall, Fort Bragg, no operator’s license, possession of taxpaid liquor with seal broken, $25 and costs; Anthony T. Law rence, Fort Bragg, no operator’s license, judgment as of non-suit; James P. McNeill, assault on fe male, three months on the roads, with a two months’ suspended sentence in a former case placed in execution, not to run concur rently, same defendant also charged with assault with deadly weapon, two months on the roads, not to run concurrently, making seven months in all, ap peal to Superior Court entered in each case, $400 bond set in each case. Route 1, Aberdeen disobey ing stop sign, pay costs and, at option of defendant, walk back to Aberdeen school, instead of pay ing a fine; Donnie Chavis, Route 3, Carthage, speeding 50 in a 35 zone, $15 and costs; James Alex ander Cameron, Niagara, speed ing 55 in 35 zone, pay costs and' walk to Howard Johnson’s Res taurant and back, in place of paying a fine; Franklin E. Saf' ford, speeding 45 in 35 zone, $10 and costs; Oscar Marion Log wood, failure to yield right of way, resulting in accident, pay costs and walk to Howard John son’s Restaurant and back. Burnest Edward McRay, Route 1, Hoffman, unsafe movement in motor vehicle, $10 and costs; Ronald Owens McKenzie, Route I, West End, speeding 70 in 45 zone, pleas of guilty to speeding 60 in 45 zone accepted, $15 and (costs; George Williams, Aber deen, worthless check, pay costs and pay amount of worthless check, through the court, after an other check has been paid; Eugene Edmisten, Route 2, Vass, speed ing 70 in 55 zone, plea of guilty to speeding 65 in 55 zone accepted, $10 and costs; Ed Dowd, assault on female, 12 months on the roads, suspended for three years on payment of the costs and on con dition he not be convicted of a similar offense involving alcohol, assault and battery or affray, during the peoriod of suspension. Joseph J. Johnson, non-sup port, defendant pleaded not guil ty but found guilty, six months in the county jail at Carthage, to be hired out by the county com missioners, his earnings to be turned over to his wife for sup port of their minor children, the sentence suspended on condition he removes himself from the home by 6 pm on the day of trial and not go back on the premises until he can adequately support his family, defendant not to be taxed with court costs; Walter J. Sanders, Hillcrest, Carthage, and James Lewis, Southern Pines, each charged with posses sion of 20 per cent wine with seal broken, a $5 fine and court costs to be divided equally between the two defendants; Lee Daniel Gaddy, affray, judgment- as of non-suit. John Lindsey Terry, assault on female, nol pros with leave on payment of costs; Spencer Coun cil, St. Pauls, nol pros with leave on payment of costs; Spencer Council, St. Pauls, non-support, nol pros with leave; Billie Lee Caesar, assault on female, prayer for judgment continued on pay ment of costs; Luther Wallace Williams, Washington, D. C., speeding 65 in 55 zone, $10 and costs; Lloyd Lee Black, Route 1, West End, speeding 50 in 35 zone, $15 and costs; Kenneth Wendell Stallings, Newport News, Va., speeding 65 in 55 zone, $10 and costs; Arthur Leon Garner, Route 1, West End, drunken driving (second offense), im proper equipment, three months on the roads, suspended on pay ment of $200 fine and costs and on condition he not be convicted of a similar offense involving motor vehicles during period of driver’s license revocation, driv er’s license to be revoked for four years, according to state law. The following defendants were charged with public drunk enness and are listed with dispo sition of their cases: John Farm er, $5 and costs; David V. Cram mer, Fort Bragg, $10 and costs; Preston W. Chavis, Route 1, West End, one month on -the roads, suspended on payment of $10 and costs (defendant is serving sentence); James L. Dowdy, Manly, one month in the county jail, to work in and around the jail, sentence in a former case to be placed in execution, not to run concurrently; Oscar Carlyle, also charged with carrying con cealed weapon, pay court costs, the weapon to confiscated; How ard Green, $5 and costs; John M. Reid, Fort Bragg, $10 and costs.
