Ashe St, was sentenced to one year on the roads, with no privilege of suspended sentencfe, by Judge W. Harry Fullenwider in the regular Wednesday session of Southern Pines Recorder’s Court last week. Appeals were entered by other defendants to whom prison sen tences were meted out. Wade H. Maness of Route 2, Carthage, charged with possession of and transporting non-tax-paid whis key, appealed to Superior Court his sentence of one month on the roads, and bond was set at $300. Two West Southern Pines men, James Ransome and Hubert Stan- back, each charged with affray, each appealed a sentence of three months on the roads, and bond for each was set at $400. In the case of Stanback, who has been in court here previously on num erous occasions, the judge direct ed that his court record be sent to Carthage, to be considered in Superior Court when his case is heard. Two scholarships for $1,000 per year for four years of study in the field of professional forestry will be awarded by the Hopewell Woodlands District this year. One scholarship will be awarded to a north Carolina student and one to a Virginia student. This is the 12th consecutive year that the company has offer ed similar scholarships to out standing 'graduating seniors in Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida and South Car olina. To be eligible for this scholar ship, an applicant must be a res ident of Virginia or North Car olina, in a county in which Con tinental Can has land ownership or procures pulpwood, or who is a resident of a city which is geo graphically located within the same counties. Moore County meets these qualifications. The award winner this year may attend the School of Fores try, North Carolina State at Ra leigh, North Carolina or West Virginia University at Morgan town. West Virginia. High School seniors who will graduate this spring and are in terested in applying for this scholarship, should contact their principals or guidance counselors for application forms and other details. Weeks, general manager of Flue-Cured Tobacco Coopera tive Stabilization Corporation, and' the cooperative’s director from District 8, T. W. Allen of Creedmoor, have announced that the 7th annual Stabilization Dis trict Meeting for tobacco growers in District 8 will be held in the Vance County Court House in Henderson, on Thursday, Febru ary 25, beginning at 2 p.m. Dis trict 8 includes Moore and nine other counties. Both Weeks and Allen em phasized that, although growers have voted overwhelmingly for the continuation of production control and price supports, cer tain basic problems must be re solved in order to maintain a sound program. Growers attend ing the Henderson meeting will have an opportunity to discuss the overall operations of the price support program as admin istered by Stabilization.
