Pines School News By JILL FORSYTH Shakespeare Monday morning, seniors from Southern Pines, Aiserdeen, Rob bins, West End and Pinehurst enjoyed a performance of seiect scenes from Shakespeare’s “Julius Ceasar’’ and “Twelfth Night,” given by a group of professional actors at the Pinehurst school auditorium. Although the pro duction lasted only an hour, it was certainly a delightfully en tertaining experience for the stu- _ dents and should prove very ben eficial for their study of Shakes peare this year. Football Banquet The annual Football Banquet was held at the Southern Pines Country Club Wednesday night of this week at 7 p.m. Dinner was served to the football players, cheerleaders and their dates. Then small gold footballs were presented to the players and the floor was cleared to make way for a dance with music provided by a dance band—a gala evening for a team and a season to be proud of! Soc-Hop There will he a soc-hop after the basketball game here with Highfalls Friday night, in the school cafeteria. And to quote the posters: “Ya’ll come!” Tests The College Board Examina tions, known also as the S. A. T., will be given again on March 6 at the school. The Merit Scholar ship Test will be given to juniors on March 13 and on the same date the National Educational Development Test will be given to sophomores. ABERDEEN NEWS By ANN J. McNEILL Study Groop The final session of “Spanish Doorways,” a study about Span- hh-speaking people, was held Sunday evening, February 7, in the Methodist Church fellowship hall. Sponenberg gave a sum mary of the study book. Mrs. Lea Yates directed a discussion of how local Methodists can help these people. Mrs. J. C. Robbins gave an interesting talk about some Spanish-speaking people residing in the Sandhills. The Children’s Department, under the direction of Mrs. Jim my Garrison and Mrs. Ed Gra ham, presented a choral reading, “I Am the Door,” and closed with the hymns. Bridge Club The Tuesday Afternoon Bridge Club enjoyed a delightful lunch eon at the home of Mrs. George Anderson on Tuesday afternoon, February 9. Following an after noon of bridge, Mrs. N. A. Pleas ants was declared high scorer of the day. Mrs. Sid Taylor was sec ond high and Mrs. Ralph Leach received the consolation prize. Others included Mrs. David Hobbs, Mrs. Lawrence Johnson, Mrs. Dan Farrell, Mrs. Bob Far rell and Mrs. C. D. McGowan. Woman's Club Mrs. Carl Wynn was hostess to the February meeting of the Aberdeen Woman’s Club. Mrs. A. S. Porter, president, presided over the business session. Mrs. F. A. Cummings gave the devotion Mrs. G. A. Charles presented a history of Valentine’s Day giv ing interesting legends of its origin. During her program, she showed some valentines years old and presented each of the 12 members and guest, Mrs. S. A. Worsley, with a lovely valentine. During the social hour, the hostess served sheet cake, nuts, mints and coffee using a Valen tine motif. Church Family Night Families of Bethesda Presby terian Church and their guests met together in the fellowship hall of the church Sunday eve ning for a delicious covered-dish supper. Special music was presented by the Primary and Junior choirs, featuring songs of other countries, in keeping with the mission theme. She and the Rev. Oliver and their daughter ^ are living in Chapel Hill during I their furlough year while Mr. Oliver is studying at the Univer sity. Colored slides of her life in the Congo were shown by Mrs. Oliver to illustrate her talk. Around 100 persons were pres ent. Mrs. Ralph Caldwell was in charge of the program. Aberdeen-Pinebluff PTA The Aberdeen-Pinebluff PTA met Monday evening in the school auditorium with the pres-| ident, Lawrence McN. Johnson,! presiding. 'The Rev. Mr. Scott of Pinebluff led the invocation. The program consisted of a parent-student panel discussing questions pertinent to teen-agers today. The panel consisted of Mrs. M. H. Lathan, Mrs. Raymond Auman, Marshall Donathan, and Vivian Green. Student panelists were Betty Jo Swaim, Kay Len non, Bill Yates, and Charles Swaringen. Gurney Baines, of the High School faculty, was mod erator. Members of the audience submitted questions at the end of the program. Briefs Mr. and Mrs. Victor Gross and son, Victor, and Mrs. Scott Miller visited relatives in Chapel Hill Sunday. Sunrise Theatre Said to be based on an actual plot perpetrated by the Nazis during World War II, Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer’s “36 Hours,” starring James Garner, Eva Marie Saint and Rod Taylor, is a drama of terrifying suspense. The thirty-six hours of the title is the time period in which the outcome of the war might have been fatefully changed if an in genious scheme devised by the Germans to gain vital informa tion about the Normandy inva sion had succeeded. “36 Hours” is the latest collab oration of William Perlberg and George Seaton, the producer-di rector team who have given the screen such effective pictures as “Counterfeit Traitor” and “The Bridges of Toko-Ri.” The film will be seen Sunday, Monday and Tuesday at the Sun rise Theatre.
