WEDNESDAY, MAY 28, 1969 THE PILOT — Southern Pines, North Carolina SECTION FOUR — PAGE THREE UNION PINES SCHOOL NEWS Visit NASA Programs Some students and faculty from the Science Department attended a lecture at Chapel Hill last Friday and a program at Morehead Planetarium last Saturday. The programs were Sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Ad- mjjiistration. 'The Friday lecture was de livered by Dr. Cyril Ponnam- peruma, Chairman of the Exo biology Division of NASA. His lecture, “Chemical Evolution and the Origin of Life,” dealt with the possibility of life on other planets and the develop- pieht of that life. A reception was- held afterward at the Faculty Lounge of the Plane tarium. The Saturday program, “Footprints on the Moon,” farpiliarized the audience with the' flight of Apollo 11, now Scheduled for a July launch in which the first lunar landing of rnan will occur! Awards Presented On Thursday an assembly was held in the school audi torium for the purpose of pre senting the athletic awards. The assembly was called to order by Student Council Pre sident Patti Blue.' After the pledge of allegiance to the flag deyotion was given by Skip- fetj Stutts. dbhn Frye recognized those 9t«|dents who recently won awards at the Athletic Ban- quet. ■ Curl Salman and Don Cam- erpn then presented Union Pines monograms and bars to the students who participated ip basketball, golf, baseball, football, cheerleading, track and tennis. Some 84 students received awards. Annuals Arrive On Monday, an assembly was held in the school audi- tprium for the purpose of dedi cating and issuing the 1968-69 school annual, “The Buckler.” The assembly was called to order by the Editor, Miss Zaida Lynch. She expressed her appreciation to John T. hfcNeill, sponsor, and mem bers of. the faculty for their patience, and to the students for the cooperation and help ip order to publish this year’s anhual. Ah appropriate dedication AyaS read and Dr. Batlett Chap pell, English professor, receiv ed the dedication. Later, W. C. Waliop, principal, received the school! anhual. Science Club Elects Officer^ For Year N^w officers for the Union Pjnte High School Science Glup for the 1969-70 term have been elected. They are Tommy Ray, president; Vickie Evans, vice president; Mary Seawell, sec retary; Bobby Greene, trea surer; Kathi Comer, reporter; and'’rrippi Johnson, librarian. Methodists To Hold June Church School Vacation church school will be held at the Southern Pines United Methodist Church on June 9-13, with Mrs. Herman Winberry as director. This year there will be a class for three-year-olds, and non^members of the church Sunday School, as well as newcomers, are invited to en roll. : CARTHAGE NEWS Fellowship The Senior High Fellowship of the United Methodist Church is spending this week end at the beach. To Preach The Rev. W. S. Golden will preach at the Presbyterian Church in the absence of The Rev. Mr. Dotson. Personals Mrs. Rooney Underwood of Sanford, Mrs. Howard Muse bf Whispering Pines and Mrs. M. J. McPhail were guests at a luncheon at the home of Col and Mrs. Reid Voss. Mrs. J. H. Beall of Lenoir is visiting her sister, Mrs. W. H. Currie. They spent the day Wednesday in Wilmington vis iting the Rev. and Mrs. Thom as Willcox Currie and their Children, Margaret Keller and Thomas Hpke Currie. Mrs. Gladys Moore spent the, weekend with relatives in Columbia, S. C. The Rev. and Mrs. B. E. Dotson flew to Honolulu on Thursday, where they will vis it their son, Lt. Bernard E. Dotson of the, Air Force. Mr. and Mrs. Dotson have a young er son, Thomas Young Dotson, who is in the Army at Fort Jackson, S. C. Mr. and Mrs. Neill McKay and daughter of Hickory spent this weekend with his grand mother, Mrs. Sadie K. Wall, and other relatives. Hoke Currie, of Presbyteri an College in Clinton, S. C-, spent the weekend with his mother, Mrs. W. H. Currie, and Voss News Final Assembly The final school assembly program with a formal pro cession of members for Eighth grade graduation will be held on Thursday afternoon, June 5, at 1:30 pm in the school au ditorium. A highlight of the program will be, the presenta tion of certificates and awards. Local 4-H'e'rs Moore County 4-H’ers met at Union Pines High School recently for the 4-H County Activity Day. Two members of the Vass 4-H Loyal Clovers were, among the 25 4-H’ers presenting demonstrations. Congratulations to Misses Carol Klingenschmidt and Connie Sue Hudson as a team and 1st place winners in Fruit and Vegetable Marketing, and Connie 2nd place in Fruit and Vegetable. Bibles Presented A portion of the morning worship service, at the Vass United Methodist Church Sunday was the presentation of personalized Bibles to three Union Pines High School sen iors by the Women’s Society of Christian Service. The Rev. Charles Wooten, pastor, pre sented the Bibles to Miss San dy Greene, Steve Craven and Randy Cameron. With the Sick Delmas Kimball who was a patient at Moore Memorial hospital for two weeks return ed home last Wednesday where he continues to conval esce . Edgar Brewer continues to convalesce at Moore Memorial Hospital where he, was trans ferred last week from Saint Joseph Hospital for special ob servation and treatment. Charles R. Cameron enter ed Moore Memorial Hospital Sunday evening where he will be hospitalized until Tuesday for X-rays. I attended a memorial tree planting given by the Carth age Garden Club in memory of his father, Wilbur Hoke Currie, and others on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Charles T. Grier has returned from a visit with Dr. and Mrs. Rufus Marshburn and children in Atlanta. Mrs. Marshburn is the former Carol Graves, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Graves df South ern Pines. Le Roy Lee continues ill at his home here.. Mrs. Mattie Smith of Greensboro, Mrs. Ruth Brown and Herman. Tyson of Ashe- boro visited their cousin. Miss Mae Tyson Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Blue and children of Greenville spent the weekend with her father. The Rev. W. S. Golden. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Cock- man of Greensboro attended the funeral of Mr. Cockman’S grandmother, Mrs. Dewey Patterson, Sunday afternoon at the First Baptist Church. Interment was at Cross Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Sam Teague has re turned to her home in Talla hassee after a visit with her sister, Mrs. Colin G. Spencer. Miss Margaret Kelly, Mrs. Sadie K. Wall and Mrs. M. G. Boyette, Sr., visited friends in Southern' Pines bn' Thursday, Mrs. N. E.
