Moore told a Commencement audience of 1,500 at St. An drews Presbyterian College, Laurinburg, Sunday that he believes the college is on its way toward fulfilling the hop es of its North Carolina Pres byterian founders and of the educators who helped set its academic pattern, St. Andrews, Dr. Moore said, and its graduates must con tinue to come to grips with HONORED — Mrs. Doris Parker Wilson who is retiring after 35 years as an ele mentary school teacher, receives a gift from her granddaughter, little Miss Ce leste Hodgkins, at a reception in her honor given by her daughter and son-in law, Mr. and Mrs. Norris L. Hodgkins, Jr., at their home on Valley Road Sunday. Some 200 persons came to honor Mrs. Wilson, who has taught in the East Southern Pines elementary school for 10 years. The corsage she wears was a gift from her students. The man in the picture is her son, Parker Wilson, who teaches at Methodist Col lege in Fayetteville. His mother taught him in fourth grade; then he taught her in a course recently in the Fayetteville school. On the right is Mrs. Hodgkins, wife of the ex-mayor of Southern Pines. The success of the event-raises the Scholarship Fund to the. level where another donation 'to a worthy local project is possible. Club members wish to thank local merchants for the donation of prizes for the ben efit Bridge. Miss Younts To Get A. A. Deg ree In Danville, Va. Miss Sandra Younts, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Younts of Southern Pines, .will receive the Associate of Arts degree in the Humanities at Stratford College .;at com mencement exercises June 1. Miss Younts attended East Southern Pines High School for two years and graduated from Graham-Eckes Prepara tory School in 1967. Active in school organiza tions she was recently elected to the Blazer Club, Stratford’s honor organization which pro motes interest in athletics and service, to the college. In ad dition she is a member of the Student Youth Fellowship, Le Cercle Francaise (French Club), basketball team, Young Republican Club, hockey team, Stratford College Chorus and Stratford College Madrigals. She was also a feature writer for the school newspaper, the Traveller. Miss Younts will continue her education at UNC-CH next fall majoring in journalism with training in radio and TV. the problems of handling pro test intelligently and of deve loping individual maturity. A large number of the Hodgkins’ friends were gath ered at the farewell party. Mr. and Mrs. Hodgkins are leaving Southern Pines to take residence in Durham, in the early part of the summer. (Moore County News Photo') Mrs. Starnes’ Dance Pnpils Perform, Receive Awards, Weaver Auditorium Numerous students received awards Saturday night when over 100 of Mrs. Pat Starnes School of Dance pupils pre sented a program entitled “Vaudeville” composed of dancing, singing and comedy routines on the stage of Wea ver Auditorium. Miss Susan Taylor, daughler of Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Taylor of Southern Pines, was the recipi ent of next season’s dance scholarship award. Others hon ored included Kit Ewing, danc er of the year; Robbie Buff kin and Karen Starnes, receiving ten-year trophies — Miss Buf- fkih conducts her own school of dance in Aberdeen and Miss Starnes is a student teacher for her mother; and Beth Huntley, best beginner of the year. Mrs. Starnes was honored with a surprise award present ed her by the parents of her students in the way of a check to cover her expenses to New York to the Dance Caravan Convention scheduled for the summer. She will take 12 of her advanced pupils with her to the convention. The “Vaudeville” perform ance attracted a large crowd. A line of type inadvertently dropped before printing was the cause of the error. The Pilot report also listed six models in a fashion show seen by the Guild as women, but it was later learned they were teen-age girls. SUSAN TAYLOR Receives Scholarship hers. Much comment was also received concerning the “Snow Interlude,” “Sugar Plum Fair ies,” “Dance of the Reed Pip es,” “Waltz of the Flowers,” “the Russian dance and the Chinese dance.” Marion McPhaul acted as commentator of the evening, describing in story form the different routines. COLLEGE FINALS SLATED TONIGHT With N. C. Attorney General Robert Morgan delivering the commence ment address, 122 Sand hills Community College graduates will receive de grees in ceremonies to be held on the campus at 8 o'clock this (Wednesday) evening.
