Page 10-A THE PILOT—Southern Pines, North Carolina Patriots Lose; Girls Remain Unbeaten In cojnference action here Friday night the Richmond Raiders defeated the Pinecrest Patriots by 74-66. The visiting Richmond team held a 37-31 lead at halftime. Richmond was led by Anthony Everett with 27 points. Leading scorer for Pinecrest was Jeffrey Carmichael with 19 points. Carmichael, a sophomore starter, took up the scoring slack for Pinecrest when center Morris Hargrove left the game early in the second half with an ankle injury. The Patriots battled back to tie Richmond at 51-51 at the end of the third quarter, and even went ahead by one point^7 to 56-with four minutes to play. In a preliminary game the Pinecrest Junior Varsity team defeated the Richmond Jayvees 58-51, with Hines leading the scoring for Pinecrest with 22 points. With the Richmond game the Pinecrest record was 8-8 and the Richmond County record was 8-7. Players scoring were: Richmond Co. (74)-Everett 27, Morrison 15, Stubbs 15, Brothens 8, Lindsey 2, LeGrand 3, Harrington 2, Beach 2, Monse 0, Holliday 0, Summers 0, Samuels 0. Pinecrest (66)-Carmichael 19, Capel 12, Ingram 13, Bamer 8, Hargrove 6, Gordon 8, Kelly 0, Vam 0. The Patriots will travel to Bowman at Wadesboro on Friday night. They have won over the Bearcats twice earlier in the season, but Coach Kemper Fitch of the Patriots said that Bowman will be tough to beat at home. “They have lost some close ones and they are better than their record,” Fitch said. Falcons Lose In a game here Tuesday night Ravenscroft defeated the Wallace O’Neal Falcons by 72-55. The Falcons were led in scoring by John Wood with 19 and Ken Jewett with 18 points. The O’Neal record is now 7-7, and Ravenscroft is 9-5. The auction will be held in the school auditorium from 7:30 p.m. until completed. New items will be auctioned off by auctioneer Billy Voss. Items to be sold wiU have been donated by the merchants of this area. Refreshments will be available. This is one of two projects the Aberdeen Middle School Athletic Boosters’ Club undertakes yearly to help finance the nctiddle shcool athletic program. Pinecrest’s Lady Patriots held on to their perfect win record, making it their 14th, last Friday night when they downed Rich mond’s Lady Raiders 59 to 40. The Lady Patriots had trouble in the first quarter making shots even though they kept stealing and rebounding the ball. The team went to a man-to-man defense but was unable to keep the Raiders from scoring 10 points. The Raiders led at the end of the first quarter 10 to 8. Sharon Williams scored eight of the Lady Patriots’ 22 points in the second quarter. Melvarie Watson and Sherri Jackson threw in six points each. The Patriots defense tightened to hold the Raiders to eight points. The offense blocked passes, put up baskets to give the Patriots the lead at the half, 30 to 18. The Lady Patriots continued their scoring six'ee with 18 points in the third quarter. Watson got off several good shots and scored eight points against the Raiders’ defense. Watson also played good defense blocking the Raiders’ passes. Williams hit three baskets for six points in this quarter. The Patriots took an 18 point lead, 48 to 30, at the end of the third. Jan Andrews started the scoring and gave Pinecrest a 20 point lead in the final quarter. Both teams had trouble with fouls and three-second violations. A technical was called on a Richmond player; Renee Cole made the shot for the Patriots. The Pinecrest teams face Bowman Friday, January 26 on the Wadesboro teams’ home court. Statistics of game: S. The Union Pines Vikings divided a doubleheader with the Chatham Central Bears in a game at Bear Creek on Tuesday night-the Bears defeating the boys 85-77 and the Lady Vikings winning by 67-52. Chatham Central moved out to a 42-32 score at halftime, with Terry Taylor leading the scoring for 30 points in the game as a whole. Jimmy Sineath also collected 30 points for the Vikings, and James Dowd had 22. In a preliminary game the Union Pines Junior Varsity lost to Chatham Central Jayvees by 73-67. In the girls game Terry Collins and Kay Hampton combined for 46 points to lead the Lady Vikings to victory. Collins had 24 points and Hampton 22. The Lady Vikings record is now 5-2 in the Central Tar Heel 2-A Conference and 8-9 overall. Boosters Club Event Slated BY CHARLIE ENGLE The Pinecrest Athletic Boosters Club is sponsoring an evening of fun on February 3 to help raise money for Pinecrest athletics. To get the evening started, there will be a barbecue dinner from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the Pinecrest cafeteria. The price of the meal is $2.75 per plate. The real fun begins at 7 in the Pinecrest Gymnasium with a Bluegrass show and dancing for everyone. Several popular bands from the area will be performing a wide assortment of music. Among these groups is “Pack House,” a well-established band from Moore County. They have recently appeared at the Southern Pines Elks Club and at several locations in Sanford. The group’s four members are Billy Cole, David Wilson, Eddie Loving and Danny Wilson. Billy is a supervisor in maintenance at Moore Memorial and is the band’s drummer. David is a brick mason and a cowboy and is the lead guitarist. Eddie farms and cuts wood when he is not playing the organ for the group. The fipal member is the bass guitarist, Danny Wilson, who is employed at the Sanford finishing plant. “Pack House” plays mainly old standards. Top 40 country, and Top 40 rock. Other groups appearing are the “Bluegrass Tar Heels” and “The Four Gone Conclusions.” These groups will perform different types of music such as folk, bluegrass, pop, light swing, waltz, and jazz. The show will continue until 12 p.m. Tickets are $3 for singles and $5 for couples and can be purchased in advance from Pinecrest athletes. Any other groups interested in F alcons Win Two, Lose One The O’Neal varsity basketball team added two scorching vic tories, followed by a narrow loss during the past two weeks. January 8 saw the Falcons defeat the Robeson Academy team in a home game that brought a large crowd to Tate Gym in Soumern Pines, "rhe Falcons never lost the lead from the start anti coasted to a 61-39 victory. Kent Jewett poiq)ed in 26 points for the O’Neal team. Monday, January 14, the Falcons, again at home, blasted a well-balanced team from Fayetteville Academy, 64-38. Never a moment of doubt from the second quarter on, the O’Neal team, with excellent play by guards Jewett and Mike Greene, recorded their victory for a total of 7-4 for the season thus far. John Wood led the scoring for the Falcons with 21 points. Kirk Bell and Ben LeFever added 11 rebounds apiece. On Friday, January 19, the Falcons conceded a narrow loss to Southview Academy 43-41 in overtime. The first “away” game in three weeks and tte O’Neal team was down by 7 points in the first half. With better defense, the Falcons tied the score with eight seconds left. A final shot by Kent Jewett from 18 feet with two seconds left ju$t wouldn’t fall, sending the gandie into overtime. In the overtime, the loss of starters Wood and Greene to- fouls proved fatal as the South- view team, hitting seven straight free throws, put it out of readh. Wood led with 16 points as Bell pulled in 12 rebounds. Mixed Couples Carnes Team Is Winner In ‘Frostbite Open’ Play “As promised, we delivered the Frostbite Open,” said tournament director Tom Garber. But the Pinehurst Country Club golf professional did not have to be so accurate. Freezing rain, iced fairways and greens and bitter winds greeted the 23 teams which entered the Saturday event, sponsored by the Southern Pines Jaycees and Pinehurst Country Qub. Winners-perhaps they are better called survivors-were Pinehurst golf professional Robert Carnes and amateurs Keith Groseclose of Pinehurst, Don Brewer of Foxfire and the Rev. Michael Garber of Southern Pines. “The team just putted so well that I didn’t have to do any of the work,” said Carnes after his team’s 12-under-par round of 60 on Pin^urst’s No. 4 course. Carnes’ team; shot 32-28, one ahead of Dick Mondrach, ^rnie Thomas, Jack Lockard Sr. and Jack Lochard Jr. “We were very pleased, even surprised, by the turnout,” said tournament director Garber, a member of the Southern Pines Jaycee chapter. “We had teams show up fromd as far away as Winston-Salem despite the weather.” Only 36 hearty people turned out for the Sunday Mixed Couples tournament Sunday, played on the Pin^urst Country Club No. 5 course. The event was Best Ball of Male, plus Best Ball of Female added together with 100 percent handicap. The winners were the Larry Watsons and Tom Ellisons with 137. Second on match of cards with a 139, Peg Kotovsky, Scotty McGill, Elle Davey and George Rufpersberger. Third with 139, the Jim Wheatons and the Greg Crevelings, and fourth, with 143, the Robert Luhrs and the Bob Englers. Rainmakers On Jan. 22 the Rainmakers played a low net tournament. Flight A was won by Mary Gillis; Flight B winner was Selma Dufina.
