Scott, presiding, the meeting heard reports of the ac tivities of the organization for the past year, from the various Com mittee Oiairmen, and also a report and comments from the Librarian, Miss Deah Straw. Miss Straw reported that control of the Library is being taken over by the Town Council, from the present Board of Trustees, as of July 1. It was noted that this meeting marks the Eighth Anniversary of the founding of the Friends of the Southern Pines Library. The following officers were elected for the coming year: President, Mrs. Harold Scott; Vice-President, Miss Mary Con nelly; Secretary, Miss Donna Wentland; Treasurer, William Whitwell. New Directors for the Term 1981-1984; Mrs. Palmer Balsley, Gilbert Hassett, and Mrs. Nan Jackson. Mrs. ^sley and Mrs. Jackson were Charter Members in 1973. The treasurer reported that the Lawn Watering Water and energy con servation are very important to Moore County home owners, according to Charles E. Ham mond, Moore County Extension Chairman. Once warm season turfgrasses in lawns are well established, watering should be done only when the grass shows the first signs of wilt. Wilting can usually be detected by a process called “foot printing.” This technique involves walking across the lawn and watching how quickly (or if) the grass leaves regain their original, upright position. If the leaves are getting enough water, they will recover quickly. In sufficient water will cause the leaves to recover slowly, leaving a distinct impression (or “footprint”) in the turf. When a turfgrass area needs water, wet the soil to a depth of six inches. Following this watering procedure will allow and encourage deep rooting. When an area is watered lightly (1 to 2 inches deep) and frequently, the majority of the grass roots will be very shallow and liable to stress from numerous potential adverse conditions. Hanunond says “Do not apply water faster than it can be taken into the soU.” organization spent a total of $5399 for its various activities. Includ ed were: $1200 in support for the RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) Program in the Elementary School; $847 for the films for the Saturday free movies in the Library; and $2086 for a number of durable items for the Library, including: permanent book stands, large print books, film strips, and some furniture repairs. The Friends also sponsor the artists’, showings in the Gallery of the Library each month. The Friends of the Southern Pines Library look forward to a busy pro^am for the coming year, and invite the interest and the support of the community. Because of cuts in the size of the staff at the library there will be needs and opportunities for volunteer services by members of the Friends and others who value Southern Pines Library. Please call Mrs. Scott or give your name to the desk clerk if you would be a volunteer. Cateh the gc^ rings... Handcrafted in MKgoId affordably priced from $25Q“$600.
