Hood went to Clay ton Thursday to attend the Dis trict Conference. ?Miss Sallie McLean, of Max ton, is visiting Mrs. J. A. Narron. She leaves to-morrow. ?We are glad to see Captain Jolly on the streets after a severe case of pneumonia. ?The school taught by Miss Zil lah Stevens, near Mr. Willis San ders', closed this week. ?Attorney E. J. Barnes, of Dunn, spent Tuesday here on professional business. ?Turlington Institute enrolls very nearly 300?the largest enrollment in its history. ?Mr. and Mrs. Thos. J. Rand have returned from an extended visit to relatives in Wake county. ?A library seeks to teach higher Thoughts and love of truth and all that makes a man.?Tenny son. ?Miss Dixie Moore, after spend ing a short while here, returned to her home in Raleigh last Mon day. ?Mr. T. S. Diffy, agent of the i). A. Tompkins Co., of Charlotte, for cotton seed oil mills, was here this week. ?The Fortnightly Book Club will hold its next meeting at the home of Miss Mattie Pou, Mon day, April 1. ?Mr. C. H. James, of Bethel, was here this week in the interest of school desks of his manufacture. ?Mr. Millard Hales, accompa nied by his sisters. Misses Donia and Mamie,of Earpsboro, visited in town this week. ?The lit use erected for Miss Kittie Peterson over the branch is completed and she has moved into it this week. ?The Zigzag Club met with Miss Nellie Barbour last Monday night. The next meeting is with Miss Mattie McQuire. ?Mr. Zeb. V. Turlington, of Moaresville, Iredell county, is spending this week with relatives and friends in this county. ?Mrs. J. E.Dickens has moved the Dickens House around to the old De Gurley Hotel and will con tinue the business at that place. ?We are glad to learn thatthe young people of Sander's Chapel section ha ve organized a Heading Circle. We wish them much suc cess. ?Misses Ola and Leila Suttle, of Shelby, who are attending the Baptist* Female University at Raleigh, spent Sunday here with the family of Rev. J. W. Suttle. ?Mr. Z. L. LeMay has pur chased the livery business of Mr. H. D. Ellington and will continue the business at the same place. Mr. Ellington is engaged the mer cantile business. ? Mr. Thos. J. Lassiter went up to Raleigh Wednesday morning, returning Thursday evening. P ?The Methodist District Con ference is in session ut Clayton this week. Many visitors are present. ?After an extended visit in Nashville among friends, Miss Agnes Massey returns to her home in this place. ?The grand jury found a true bill against Maj. W. H. Martin, charging him with embezzlement I of the State's fund. ?Mr. J. E. Dickens has handed in his resignation as Manager of the Dispensary. His resignation has been accepted by the board. r/ ?Prof. Hoof Lirpa will jump from the court house tower on next Monday at 12 o'clock. Come ? out to see the daring Professor. ?The store room and offices being built by Mr. T. C. Jordan and Dr. E. T. Dickinson, is being I pushed and in a few weeks will present an attractive appearance. ?Mun Johnson, the pal of Charlie Saunders, who is serving a term in the Penitentiary for stealing a horse and cow in Selma, has been arrested in 1 Greensboro. ?The engine man has finished his work over at the cotton mill. Work is being pushed on rapidly. Next week the monster whistle will announce that steam has been turned on. ?In re-districting the State, Johnston county was placed in the Fifteenth Senatorial district. The district is composed of John ston, Sampson anu Harnett and will have two Senators. - ?Master Lee Turlington, son | Prof. Turlington while helping j to unload a wagon of hav fell from the barn loft last Saturday ! hurting himself badly. It came near being a seiious accident. ?The General Assembly ap I pointed Messrs. W. F. Gerald, John W. Wood and John Ste phenson, members of the County Hoard of Education. They are the present board. Their term will expire the first Monday in July, 1903. Sanders Chapel Reading; Club. The young people of the Sanders Chapel neighborhood met last Friday night at the church for the purpose of organizing a Reading Club. Only fourteen were present, hut what is now the Sanders Chapel Reading Club was successfully organized. The following officers were I elected: President?Miss Sarah Whitley.
