? ? 1 Notes ot Notables. Upon the expiration of his present term in 1003, Mr. Allison will have been a I'nited States Senator for thirty consecutive years. Senator I'ettus is the Morrill of Alabama?being eighty years old?with no intention of not being elected next term?and with no disposition on the part of his constituents to retire nim. The mother of Governor Heck ham, of Kentucky.has a remark able record. She has the unpre cedented distinction of having been the mother of a governor, the daughter of a governor, the sister of a governor and a cousin of a governor. Webster, Sumner, ItufusChoate, Kossuth.Theodore Parker, Kmer son, Channing, .fared Sparks, Al cott, Lyman Heecher, Thomas Starr King, Dorothea Dix, Lucy Larcom, Holmes, Longfellow and many more whose fame still lives, all sat for daguerreotypes lo .losiah Johnson Hawes; and he has just joined them. Joaquin Miller is said to be on the road to wealth. Some time ago he took, in part payment for services as a lecturer, several hundred acres of prairie land, and now it is said his holdings are in the oil region and may make him a capitalist. The au thor of "Songs of the Sierras" has had a good many ups and downs in life; and no one can be grudge him this good turn of fortuue. You Know What You are Taking-. The First McKinley Monument. Chicicago Tribune. The first McKinley monument! to be erected in thel 'nited States was dedicated last Sunday. It is not so elaborate as others that j will rise in the future. No stately arch, no ornate mausoleum. It J is a plain stone shaft eighteen! feet high. It cost only $12,000. j I tut its speedy erection speaks volumes for the affection the poor and warm-hearted piople! who contributed the money had for their murdered President. This monument stands in the lit- j tie town of Tower, in Northern Minnesota. The men who subscribed the money are mostly the iron ore miners of the vicinity. They are getting good wages now but they are not overburdened with wealth. Therefore the persons who had charge of theerection of the monument were wise in not endeavoring to collect more money and put pp a more pre tentious structure. T hey cut their coat according to their cloth. They did not try to do too much and in doing so run the risk of accomplishing nothing. This simple, inexpensive, and prompt tribute to tneineinory of William McKinley, erected by working people who believed he had a warm heart for them and had done much to aid them, would give him keener pleasure? if the dead could be pleased by monuments?than any lordly memorials in stoneorbronze that architects or sculptors may de vise to commemorate him. Eleven Negro Children in a County. In compiling school statistics in the office of the State Superin tendent of Public Institution the fact was brought to notice there are onlv eleven negro children? four boys and seven girls?in Hrahatn conntv. That is, the school census only gives that number between the ages of <> and 21 years. The report shows that there arc 1,(51.'$ white chil dren, with 1,1121 enroled in the schools. There is no negro school in Che county.?Raleigh Post. The Children's Friend. You'll have a cold this winter. Maybe you have one now. Your children will suffer too.
