But grief's not for long, Out of the sorrow The joy of a song! II. What are t'ue dreams Of the desolate night? Out of the darkness The lilies of light! ?Frank L. Stanton. EVENTS AND COMMENTS Hon. Whitelaw lteid, theeditor I of the New York Tribune, whoi has been appointed Ambassador from the United States to Great Britian, has decided to live in magnificent style while in the world's metropolis. He has leas ed the Dorchester House in Lon don at a rental of $45,000 per year. His salary is only $17,500 per annum. One more Johnston county town?Pine Level?has joined the ranks of the prohibitionists. The fight against the legalized liquor traffic in Johnston county is a determined one and means that in a few more weeks all liquor shops, known as dispen saries, will be closed. When Clayton and Kenly joins the pro cession on June 20th, old John ston can be counted in the list of dry counties. It is believed in Washington that preliminary peace negotia tions between .Japan and Russia are now uuder way, but it is not believed that President Roosevelt will be called upon to act as medi ator. Last [weekj the President had a conference with Count Cassini, the Russian Ambassa dor at Washington, aud showed his willingness to be the channel of communication between the belligerents. It is reported from Rt. Petersburg that the Czar wishes to know Japan's peace terms. While nothing olficial can be learned it is confidently believed that peace is near. A recent Tokio dispatch says that the Japanese navy depart ment has decided to build a great lighthouse on Okino Island to commemorate Admiral Togo's gieat naval victory over the Russian fleet in the Reaof Japan. It is planned that the light shall be so powerful that its beams will penetrate the darkness a dis tance of 80 miles, practically covering the entire scene of the great battle. Not ouly will this be a fitting monument to com memorate the great victory but it will also be a great con venience to navigation. It is but another evidence that the Japanese are a great and humane people. A few years ago the United States rose up in her power and might and whipped Spain, a decadent nution, though once one of the proudest and most powerful in the world. And Uncle Sam was hailed through, out the earth as a world power Little Japan has humiliated Russia, a world power, and has won the right to be placed in the jront rank of nations. I>essthan 50 years ago the ports of Japan were closed against the nations of the world. The opening of her ports cleared the way for the introduction of Western civiliza tion, the civilization that has won a great victory through Japan over the autocratic and tyrannic empire of Russia. J The Franklin (Ya ) Graphic, in speaking of the dispensary question says: "The dispensary here was the first established in Yirgiuia, and now after it has been in operation here for several years, in its favor we can only say that it makes money. If there is anything else good about it, it is so completely swallowed up by the bad, that we are unable to see the good." The same can truthfully be said about all whiskey dispensaries. PRINCETON VOTES FOR SCHOOLS We desire to congratulate the people of Princeton on the ad vanced step they have taken for education. They held an election last Monday to decide whether they should tax themselves for the purpose of having a better school. Seventy-seven votes were cast for the tax and 27 against it.
