Ex-Mayor McCall, of Charlotte, says be is for Senator Tillman for the Democratic nomination for President. No Southerner has grown more rapidly within the past year or two in all sec tions of the country than has the pitchfork Senator from the Pal metto State. The speech-making on the Hail road Rate Bill continues in the Senate. Senator Overman made the principal speech on Monday and the press says Carolina's junior Senator acquitted himself with credit. Moth our Senators have offered amendments to the bill. The first of May is drawing near and we would remind our readers that unless a man has ' paid bis poll-tax for 1905 by that time he cannot vote in the election for this year. This is u very important matter aud ev ' ery man who wishes to vote; i should make himself eligible by \having his poll-tax receipt before .\luy 1st. The Morning Star, oi Wilming ton, has at last fallen in line and changed its form to the popular six-column quarto. The Star clung to the four page form until its increasing patronage forced it to change. The Star is the oldest daily in the State and has all these yeurs been regarded as one of our safest and most con servative papers. We are glad to note the prosperity oftheStar and hope that it may long live to eend forth itss cintillations Since J udge Parker's speech at Charlotte several North Caroli nians have been mentioned as available timber for the Demo cratic Presidential nomination. Mayor McNinch, of Charlotte, says that I). A. Tompkins, of that city, would make a suitable candidate; Dickinson, of the Washington Post staff, mentions Senators Overman and Simmons; Timothy Tree top, in the Kaleigh Times, names Josephus Daniels for President aud Cy Watson for Vice President. Ho also selects the entire cabinet from North ' Carolina. i The Hamilton Club of Chicago, the big Republican club of the "windy" city, has invited Con gressman Claude Kuehin to be one of the speakers at their ban quet to be held on April Dtb, the 4Tst anniversary of the Appo- , mattox surrender. Mr. Kitchin ( will respond to the toast, "The 1 South." The other speakers on f this occasion wdl be Attorney- J General Hadley, of Missouri, and ] Congressman Nicholas Long- ( worth, of Ohio. This invitation is a high compliment to the young Representati\e of the Second District. Rural mail carriers have receiv- [ ed instructions to count the num- \ ber of pieces of mail they carry t during the months of April, May 1 and June. All routes that aver- 2 age 2000 pieces or more per ' month will becontinued. If some of the routes in this county fail to average 2000 pieces per month i there is danger that the service 1 may be reduced to three times ' per week or lees. We believe that \ the people of Johnston county i are highly in favor of the rural - free delivery and we trust that i none of our routes will bediscon tinued. Subscribe for your coun- 1 tj paper. ? FIRE HERE SUNDAY. New Chemical Fire Engine Soon Ex tinguishes Flames In Royett's Drug Store. A very serious Are wasnarrow ly averted here Sunday after noon and but for the prompt ac tion of the Smithfleld Fire Com pany and the ready response of our citizens, both white and col ored, one of the main business blocks of the town might now be in ashes ''"he fire originated just behind the prescription counter of Mr. A. 11. Hoyett's drug store and is supposed to have been caused by the explosion of a small hand lamp. The fire wasj not discovered until one of the j large panes of glass in the front; was blown out by the heat and j smoke. The alarm was given and in less than ten minutes the j fire company with its new com bination chemical fire engine was I on the scene. It was aot long before the| flames were under control and [ extinguished. Mr. Moyett's stock !: suffered great damage from fire ; and water and the stock of \1 Spiers Mros., in the adjoining i building was damaged some by j water. The buildings belong to ; Mrs. A. N. Lee and are fully in- j sured, as were also the stocks of | goods contained in them. The members%f the fire com pany did splen\id work, but | showed the need of more thor- i ough organization. The work j of the colored men deserves much | praise. They worked the pump j with an earnestness and a wil- j linguess that showed that they < I. .J ..... .j . .1 ? e II can ue uepenueu ori in a case 01 ;. emergency. I i I wish to thank the citizens of Smithlield, and especially the | Smithtield Fire Company, for j their services Sunday afternoon i in subduing the tire that destroy- 1 ed my stock of goods.
