LIBERTY LOAN OVERSORI BED.
Total Reaches Near Two Billion
Eight Hundred Million Dollars.
Fifty Percent Taken by Small In
vestor!!.
A Washington dispatch of June
17th to the daily press says that
with three federal reserve district
totals complete and the work of tab
ulating returns in the other nine
nearing its end, indications were to
night that liberty loan subscriptions
would total in the final count approx
imately $2,800,000,000 and that the
total would be definitely known,
subject to minor revisions, late to
morrow.
Pinal* tabulations were reported
today by the Philadelphia and Cleve
land reserve banks. Although Atlan
ta's total of $52,500,000 was com
pleted yesterday, no official report
had been received at the treasury
tonight. The Philadelphia and
Cleveland figures were not announc
ed here, but they were known to ap
proximate in round numbers $229,
000,000 and $279,000,000, respectively.
Treasury officials are desirous of
receiving official returns at the ear
liest possible practicable moment in
order that the mammoth task of al
lotments soon may be commenced. To
place these figures at their disposal
reserve banks forces worked today,
in some instances, in the hope that
all returns would be in the depart
ment's hands not later than Jtomorrow
night.
To facilitate the allotments banks
are making their returns, at the re
quest of treasury officials, in denom
inational groups, forwarding the to
tals of small denominations first.
Subscribers to the small denomina
tions, it is expected, will numbed more
than 50 per cent of the total. It is
possible that all subscribers up to
$10,000 will receive their allotments
in full, thus restricting the prorating
of allotments to subscriptions in ex
cess of that sum in bringing the total
down to $2,000,000,000 in accordance
with Secretary McAdoo's announce
ment.
Cotton and Cotton Goods.
The 25-cent price for cotton, which
was fixed upon as a kind of goal by
the optimists some months ago, was
reached and passed during the week
just closed. And this was true at a
time when the prospects of the grow
ing crop showed improvement. Pos
sibly one reason for the rise was the
knowledge of the larger consump
tion of the article in domestic mills.
This wr.s brought out in the Govern
ment report on Thursday, which
showed a usage of nearly 700,000
bales of cotton during May. For the
ten months of the cotton year the
consumption was 5,684,000 bales. Less
than three months' supply was on
hand at the beginning of the present
month in mills, and the holders down
South are in a position to keep what
they have until they get their price.
Exports have been a little in excess
of last year's, but, at that, the
amount on hand in Great Britain is
exceedingly small. It is noteworthy
that, despite alleged labor shortage,
the number of cotton spindles active
last month was about 1,200,000 in ex
cess of those in the same month last
year. In the goods end the last week
has witnessed some very heavy trad
ing in gray goods at the highest lev
els reached since civil war times. Ev
erything made of cotton is moving to
higher prices or being placed at value.
In certain directions, such as duck,
for example, the mills could find a
market for much more than they can
turn out. In knit goods there has
been a little doing for next Spring
in woman's underwear. After July 4
prices will be fixed, after a fashion,
on balbriggans.? New York Times.
Miss Melba McCullers at Reunion.
Miss Melba McCullers has return
ed from the Confederate Reunion at
Washington, which she attended as
Sponsor for the North Carolina Di
vision United Confederate Veterans.
Among the social functions she at
tended were the Tea Dance, given by
the Secretary of the Navy and Mrs.
Daniels; the reception at the Pan
American Building, given by the Sec
rotary of State and Mrs. Lansing and
the other cabinet officials; and the
meeting of the North Carolina So
ciety of Washington, at which the
Governor spoke and received. On
this occasion Miss McCullers had a
seat on the rostrum and later re
ceived with Governor Bickett. Be
fore leaving Washington Miss Mc
Cullers attended the unveiling of the
Robert E. Lee monument on the fa
mous battlefield of Gettysburg. She
enjoyed the unique experience of hav
ing the battle with all its maneuvers
explained to her by a Union officer. ?
