NEW HIGH RECORDS IN COTTON. Prices at Levels Not Equaled Since Civil War Period. Crop Estimates Reduced. It is not clear to all that predictions of 30 cent cotton will be realized, bat they have seemed less extravegcnt after the reccnt striking action of prices. Instead of the decisive read justment which some people thought would surely make its appearance, the rise was promptly resumed :-.fter last week's extended adjournment and the market soon attained a level not equaled since the Civil War period. Thus, the October delivery crossed 28 1-4 cents, December rer.chcd 27.82 cents, January 27.36 cents, and both March and May went above 27 cents, while the local spot quotation touch ed 28.<55 cents. Between the high and low points of the week there was an extreme range of more than 100 points in the option list, and Friday ended with futures up over $3 from the closing figures of October 11 and with a gain of $5 in spots. Not everyone has viewed with sat isfaction the recent great advance in cotton, for it would not have been pos sible without a change for the worse in the crop situation. After two years of moderate production, it* was hoped and expected by many that this sea son would bring a different outcome; but results unfortunately have again been disappointing and early frost has made prospects even poorer than was indicted by the last official fore cast, which was about 12,000.000 bales of lint. Predictions of further frost this week were what supported the market at a time when it looked as if decisive reaction would otherwise have been witnessed, and from the South came some very bullish opinions about the harm frost has already done. But in not a few quarters one private estimate of little more than 10,000,000 brles was regarded with skepticism, if not suspicion, and though a considerable loss through frost is conceded, it does not follow that the outlook is as dark as some speculators have painted it, To those who have been persistently saying that the rise has been carried too fast and too fcr, the action of the market has been disconcerting; but it is still being insisted that prices will not hold once the crop really begins to move in volume. ? Dun's Review. Death of Little Melva Louise Upchurch. We deeply sympathize with Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Upchurch, of Ben tonsville township, in the loss of their darling baby who was transplanted from this leaf-bed of sorrow to that celestial garden of perfect happiness, Saturday night, September 23, 1917. Little Melva was about seventeen months of age, was pn especially bright child intellectually, was so sweet and good during the most ex cruciating pain. She was sick about five days with a complication of dis eases and suffered untold misery. Physicians and lowd ones tenderly watched by her, until the angels bore her sweet little spirit away on their snowy white wings to be at rest eter nally. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Mr. Crocker, of Falcon, N. C., and the little body laid to rest in Antioch cemetery. 'Tis true little Melv^i has left us, And our loss we deeply feel, But we should look to Jesus, Who can all our sorrows heal. AUNT ANNA. BELGIUM ITEMIZES DAMAGES. I Germany Must Pay Ruined Nation ' $1,500,000,000 for Her Des picable Acts. ^ i J Paris, Oct. 20. ? At least one and a j half billion dollars is one of the first items Germany must settle when it comes to squaring up accounts. This is the approximate amount of { damage by German depredations in Belgium, according: to official statis- J. tics received to-day. ^ Following is the "statement of ac counts," as itemized by the Belgian Government: War contributions levied up to Au gust 10, 1917, $288,000,000. Private war contributions and fines up to the end of 1914, $40,000,000. Confiscation of machinery and re quisitioning of raw materials to Janu ary, 1915, $400,000,000. Destruction of sources of economic wealth (not including destruction of private property, which is still con tinuing), $1,000,000,000. The Belgian statistics do not in clude claims for the enormous loss resultant from the cessation of Bel gium industries. Nor do they in clude damages for many German acts in stripping factories. FOR RENT? A GOOD SIX-ROOM dwelling, equipped with water and < lights, on Oakland Heights. See or write Mrs. George R. Pou, Smithfield, N. C. . ... tkdu* - . riiiirtiaiii Always the greatest possible value al the price E are joining with the progressive merchants from coast to coast who are this week making a special display of Styleplus suits and overcoats. For three years the makers have maiutaiiied Styleplus at $17 in the face of war conditions. They bought in advance, operated on an increasingly larger scale, and thus kept costs down. When the United States entered the war the fabric market underwent violent changes. To meet these new conditions a $21 grade was added, thus insuring you an even wider selection in fabrics and models. N. B. GRANTHAM, Smithfield, N. C.
