LIBERTY BOND ISSUE A GREAT SUCCESS. '? ? " ?' The Second Liberty Loan was closed last Saturday. The Government fixed three billion dollars as a minimum and five billions as a maximum. While the official reports have not been made public yet, it appears that the maxi mum has been reached and that the I American people have shown that the" "2 in earnest about the war by i loaning Uncle Sam their money in I great sums. Germany again has our , answer which means that we are not | going to let up until I'russianism is ! defeated. , The ni ws from the Italian front is rather disquieting. The Austrian* have r ccntly been greatly strength ened on the northern Italian line by strong German forces led by the great leader, Markensen. The Italians have suffered severe reverses and much territory has been taken from them by the Austro-Gtrrnan forces. The news published in the Sunday morning papers that the American soldiers are now in the firing trenches in Northern France sent a thrill through the heart of evt ry true Amer ican. The news that General Pershing had sent some of his men into the trenches on a quiet rector came a lit tle earlier than was generally expect ed. From week to week the news from overseas is going to have a | greater and growing interest to our | people. IliL'h prices in this country have not j lc < ii. I Jin pink con; umption. Mr. j Hoover says that the consumption of j American pork h.i outstripped th j production. Mr. Hoover emphasizes the great need of ships, wheat and j hogs. The wheat surplus in the Unit ed States is put at 80, 000, 0(H) bushels, I with ir,(i,00?MM?0 iu 1 1 - su;-|.!u. in j ? Canada. Mr. Hoover urges the Amcr- I ican people to practice such economy in wheat consumption th t we tan ! spare 1;>0,000,000 hu 'iels mere to help j feed the allies. They need to have 577,700,000 bushels to (rive them their normal supplies. It is our duty to help all we can. Several matters of importance have j had a place in the news of the past j few days. President Wilson pave his j full endorsement of woman suffrage j as an immediate issue in every j State in an address before a delega- j tion of 100 leaders of the New York j State suffrage party who called at the j White House last Thursday. Mr. Wil son praised the spirit, capacity and vision the American women have ^ shown in the war and told his visi- | tors that the question of woman suf- | frage should have our immediate con- I sideration. Elections will be held on j the woman suffrage question in New j York and Ohio next week. Next Wednesday is Educational Day at the Johnston County Fair and all the schools of the County are in vited to be on hand and take part in the school parade. The Turlington Graded School will give Wednesday as a holiday and it is hoped that every one of th(> more than four hundred children will be in line and enjoy the day with the other school children of the county. Come and see<<he Aeroplane, some thing which has never been exhibited at the Johnston County Fair before. It will fly' every day. Coming from Tarboro on Wednesday, the first day of the Fair, it will light in front of the grand stand. Be sure to come and s.*e this. The exhibits frcm the farm will be better this year than ever before. DEATH OF MR. W. H. GRAHAM. I>ierf \l Hi* Home In Ingrams Town- I whip Saturday Night After a Short Illness. Mr. W. II.
