Laurinburg is in the midst of the canteloupc industry. From 1,000 to 1,200 car loads of these melons are shipped from that section each sea son. In anticipation of the collection of the taxes for the current year the Chairman of the Charlotte School Board has been authorized to borrow ?50,000 to carry on the work of the schools. If all the owners of registered dogs in Mecklenburg County pay their dog tax the schools of that county will get an additional $1,676 this year. Charlotte had 70 deaths and 90 births during the month of February. The street car company of Durham is asking that fares be increased to six cents. Zimri Falls, the Cleveland County man who invested one thousand dol lars in War Savings Stamps, has re ceived a letter of thanks from Secre tary McAdoo. Death of Mr. R. I. Ogburn. We regret to learn of the death of Mr. R. I. Ogburn, father of Deputy Sheriff, Hubert Ogburn, which oc curred at his home in Pleasant Grove township Saturday morning: about eight o'clock. He had been in poor t health for many months. He was V buried Sunday in the family burying ground. The funeral service was con ducted by Elder W. A. Simpkins, of Raleigh. He leaves a wife and seven children. Mr. Ogburn was a splendid citizen and had served his community and county well. He served one term as County Commissioner. He was about fifty-seven years of age. Pleasant Grove Fair. Every citizen of Pleasant Grove Township who is interested in organ izing the Fair for this year, is re quested to meet at the township court house Friday, March 8th, 10 o'clock a. m. G. Pro ceeds to go for both schools. Admis kion 10 and 20 cents. Death of Rev. R. >V. HorrelL A letter was received here last week telling of the death of Rev. R, W. Horrell which oecured at Zolfo, Fla., on February 18th. He moved to Florida a few years ago for his health. He did Missionary work in Johnston County for several years and was one of the best preachers of the county during his stay here. For a whilo he owned a farm near Selma which he improved and developed. He and his good work will long be remembered by the people of this county. Many will hear of hia death with regrets. Cattle for Johnston County. The cattle purchasing trip that was postponed for several reasons will be made March 13th. Several farmers here have volunteered to go with the Animal Husbandry field agent to buy these cattle. If others care to go also let me know before then. Also, if there are any who want any milking strain shorthcrns (dual pur pose cattle) give me your order be for Saturday evening, March 9th. We wish to thank our good neigh bors and friends for their kindness to us since our house was destroyed by fire. Words can't tell how thank ful we are. It is bad to lose what you have, but in one way we feel better than before. We know our neigh bors and friends love us. The Good Book says, "Enter into thy closet and pray to thy Father in secret and thy Father which seeth in secret will reward thee openly." This is a true proof of God's Word. In getting up the names of the sol dier and sailor boys from Johnston County we desire to make the list as near accurate as possible in every particular. In order to do this there are certain facts needful. Those who are so kind as to send in the names of their relatives and friends who are in the army and navy should remem ber to give us ? 1. Full name of man and age. 2. His home address and township. 3 Name of parents, if living. 4. Did he volunteer or was he in the draft? 5. What branch of service is he in? 6. Company and Regiment? 7. Where is he at present? 8. Any other matters of interest in connection with him. We should like to get these facts about any boy who went into the service from Johnston County, or who was born in Johnston and happened to enter the service from some other section. As soon as all the information is in we shall write up the list and publish it complete in one issue of The Smith field Herald. Those who have good pictures of their friends and relatives may send them along with the facts asked for above. Cuts will be made and printed in The Herald.
