APRIL GRAIN AND LIVE STOCK CONDITIONS (By Frank Parker.) Raleigh, N. C., April 9. ? The North Carolina office of the Bureau of Crop Estimates of the United States De partment of Agriculture today makes public the following conditions of grain crops and live stock. These fig ures compiled from reporters through out the state are based on those an nounced by the Federal office at Wash ington this afternoon, for April 1st conditions. Grain Crops. The Wheat crop for this state shows 95 per cent of a full normal condi tion. The average year has been 89 per cent of a normal crop. Last year's crop at this date showed only 79 per cent condition. The past winter was the most severe for many years, but the crop was protected most of the time by snow or sleet. The stand and growth in the western part of the state is extra good. Tho United States condition of this crop is 79 per cent of normal, com pared with 84 per cent for the 10 year average. Last y?ar was 63.4 per cent, which was low. Rye for grain is grown mostly in the western part of the state, and in general the condition is much the same as wheat, showing a condition of 95 per cent, compared with the same average that whoat has. The United States' condition for rye is 85.8 per cent compared with 89 per cent, for the 10 years average. The winter oat crop for the state has a very low condition, the winter weather, having left a poor stand. The fall acreage was reduced. Although the spring acreage is increased. Live Stock Losses (Per 1.000 Head.) The mortality of horses and mules for the state, that have died during the past year from diseases, is esti mated at 21 out of each 1,000. The last year and the 10 year average has been 20. Cattle, dying of disease for the past year were 21 compared with 21 for the average year. Cattle, dying of exposure show 14 compared with 14 for the average year. Sheep mortality from disease was 20 com pared with 22 for last year and for the average. The sheep dying from exposure for the past year are esti mated at 2.3 compared with 18 for the average year. Lambs show 40 com pared with 40 for the average year. The mortality of swine from disease is given at 55 compared with 50 for last year and the average. The mor tality of pigs from exposure during the winter was very high. Mortality per 1,000 of live stock from disease for the United States has been respectively for the past and the average year as follows: horses for the year 16.5 and the av erage year 19.4; cattle of disease 18.2 and 20; cattle of exposure 13.3 and 14.3; sheep of disease 19.8 and 24.4; sheep of exposure 19.2 and 30.2; lambs 49.3 and 59.8; and swine of disease 42.1 during the past year and 67.5 for the average year. Breeding Sows. The number of breeding sows now on farm the year before. During the with those last year. Last year's es timate showed the same number as on farm sthe year before. During the past month many car loads of hogs have been transported in the state as well as imported from outside. The number in the United States is 109 per cent, compared with last year. April 1st Live Stock Conditions. The present condition of horses is 9 1 per cent of a full or normal con dition compared with 96 per cent, for the average year. Cattle show 96 per cent, compared with 94 per cent aver age. Swine are estimated at 96 per cent, compared with 95 last year for the average year. Horses and cattle seem to have gone through the winter unusually well, considering the seasons, too the month of March offered unusual op portunity for their recuperation. Sheep and hogs suffered considerably from exposure and have come through the winter greatly weakened with great loss and depleted conditions of the winter bred stock. Stock conditions for the United States are Horses 96.2, Cattle 95.6 sheep 96.9 and swine 96.3. These are better than last year's. Room for Them. Eat a fish if you'd develop brains," She heard the doctor say; "My husband then," said Mrs. Hayes, Should eat a whale each day." Notice of Registration. To the Voters of Smifhfield Township: Having been appointed Registrar the Registration books for the purpose of registering for Special Tax Elec tion to be held Tuesday, April HOth, 1918, will be open at the Court House in Smithfield on each Saturday be tween March 29th and April 20th 1918. Days between these dates books will be open at the Mayor's office. New reg istration is required. J. N. COBB, Registrar Smithfield Township. This March 27th, 1918. THE KAISER S CHURCH. Is the Kaiser a Lutheran! The Lutherans say he isn't. Is the Kaiser a Reformed Church member! The Reformed Church people protest that he is not. A Lutheran Church paper de clares that "the Kaiser's personal re ligious views are more Reformed than Lutheran." The Reformed Church Messenger comes back with this: "We won't put the Kaiser on them against their will. But neither will we allow them to hand him over to us." True brotherly spirit, but we fan cy that the vaunted close partner ship existing between "Me und Gott" enable "Me" to have a private re ligion of his own. The Kaiser is the pastor of his own church; Hindenburg is leader of the choir and the Devil is the janitor. ? Oxford Ledger. DISSOLUTION NOTICE.
