chased by Mr. John Williams, merchant, at 9 cents per pound. The planters in this vicinity have generally commenced picking Cotton, and from what we can learn, an average crop may be anticipa ted several neighborhoods suffered se verely from the late drought. Corn is raised in great abundance, and it is sup posed, will not sell for more than 75 cents or $1 per barrel. FOR THE FREE PRESS. Mr. Howard Sir: it appears that a correspondent from Scot land Neck is much surprised at the vote of Capt. White's compa ny on the Presidential question, recently taken on Beech Swamp at a barbacue. He states that White's company consists of Only 46 men, officers included, and how 79 for Jackson and 3 for Adams can be made out of 46, he requests Editors and others to solve he acknowledges that he was not present at the barbacue, yet calls upon you to correct the libel on his neighbors; and by way of con tempt, holds out an idea that the Jackson party in that assembly were not able to purchase a ham of bacon worth fifty cens. If this wealthy correspondent of Scot land Neck, instead of comment ing on the poverty of his neigh bors would examine after truth; he would find tluit a number of the inhabitants attended that barba cue whose names were not at tached to Capt. White's muster roll, some with gray heads who were free by age, others from ad joining districts, and most of them respectable citizens, freemen, and if poor, they have a constitutional right to vote on that question and, as no gentleman will expose a man merely because he is poor, if he be honest, I would admonish this correspondent of Scotland Neck to desist from such a low practice; and further, that he first prove to Editors that they have given publicity to a libel before he calls upon them to correct one for, according to the old nrovorh. he who knows but little about a matter, had best say but little UUUUl II. Crops in Alabama. It is with regret we learn, that great havoc has been commenced on the Cot ton fields in this, and some of the adjoining counties; and that the flattering prospects presented to our planters but a few weeks ago, of realizing almost unparalleled crops, is now alas! vanished. We are told that, generally, not more than half an ordinary crop is ex pected, and in some instances there will not be a yield of more than 200 weight to the acre, where it was anticipated 10 or 1200 would be produced. The insect resembles a caterpillar, which en ters the bole shortly after it is for med, and causes it to die and dropoff the stalk. Last year was we are told that many, and prob ably most of those who have gone, are undetermined as to what quan tity they will obtain, till they are further informed of the feelings and opinions of the people with regard to the Tariff." ' . Cotton Spinning. We are sorry to say that the business of cotton spihning and cotton weav ing, is very dull in this vicinity at the present moment. This dull ness of business following so quickly the administering of the panacea of the "American Sys tem," ought to awaken reflection in the breasts of the manufactu rers. The editor of the Augusta (Georgia) Chronicle asserts, that "not one half of the merchants of Augusta that usuallv visit the north at this season to purchase goods, have gone on there this summer; and the army of Prince Wittgenstein. It is stated that an expedition with 12,000 troops, was shortly to sail from France, to compel the 1 urks to evacuate the Morea. France is said to take this step at the request of the Emperor of Jvussia, and it is added that Lng land is to co-operate with a naval force, so that these powers are rep resented as still acting in concert. Dr. Charles Von Mayerly, in Germany, has lately invented a pair of boots, made of block tin and surrounded with a hollow bo dy, with the assistance of which he can pass over the most rapid river. He has lately exhibited his contrivance at Pest, at which place he walked for upwards of 50U fathoms in the river Uanube, where it is very rapid and deep, in presence of a great many persons. -:.-- Preachi?ig.Mr. CONGLETON will preach at Tarborough, on Thursday, 18th inst.; Friday, 19th, at Old Town Creek; Saturday, 20th, at Tossnot; Sun day, 21st, at Poplar Spring; Monday, 22d, at Epoada; Tuesday, 23d, at Be thel; Wednesday, 24th, at Willow Spring; Thursday. 25th, at PineyGrove.
