FOR THE FREE TRESS.
The feasting of the eyes upon living
animals.
Methinks 'tis not amiss to say,
That on a mild November day,
A monstrous host of monkies came
To town, with bears and babboons tame;
Lions, tigers, camels, cats,
I saw no ferrets, mice nor rats;
But almost every "varmont" came,
That has a queer and curious name.
Six wagons full of no small size,
Was spread before our hungry eyes;
And strange to tell, at one day's close,
.Not e'en was seen a babboon's nose.
"Ah! well pray, Sir, tell us what did go
With all these varmonts' let us know."
XVhy, our eyes 'tis passing strange to say,
Devour'd 'em all in one short day;
Or else like boiling water they,
To vapor chang'd and vapor'd away;
For certain it is upon that ground,
No trace of babboons can be found,
. Nor no other sort o' varmont.
5th inst.
The ground on which the babboons, Sec.
were exhibited.

By John Campbell.
HPHE Minerva will be printed on a
large sheet of good paper, with hand
some type. Information, of every kind,
interesting to the Farmer, the Politician,
the Merchant, the Professional Gentle
man, and the Mechanic, will be careful
ly selected; nor shall the Ladies and
those fond of amusement be neglected.
In fine it will be my grand aim to ren
der the Minerva a welcome visitor and
an instructive and amusing companion
to every class of the community.
I am a Republican in principle, and a
Southron in feeling. But on all impor

rests or party spirit may excite discus
sion, I shall endeavor to puisue a mode
rate and cautious course. The columns
of the Minerva shall never be lent to a
Faction; nor advocate principles or
measures hurtful to our common coun
tr3T. The merits of candidates for im
portant offices will be canvassed strictly,
but fairly; and the errors of those in of
fice shall be exposed.
Upon the all-er-grossing subject of the
Presidential question, it is unnecessary
to speak, as the election will have been
made before the publication of the Mi
nerva commences.
With this brief sketch of my view
and principles, I most respectfully soli
cit public patronage. Persons (0 whom
this prospectus shall be sent, will please
use their exertions to obtain subscribers,
and make a return to the Post-master at
Halifax by the 1st of December next, as
it is designed to commence the publica

The price of subscription will be two
dollars and fifty cents, if paid in ad

Any person who shall procure si
