Navy Depart ment has been conferred on our respec ted townsman, Major James W. Clahk. Wc learn that the appointment was un solicited, and so totally unexpected on the part of Maj. Clark, that in the first instance he declined it the Hon. Sec retary, however, temporarily filled the office, and invited the Major to meet him at Enfield after a short conference, Major C. finally concluded to accept the offer, and will proceed in a few days to Washington. We believe we ex press the opinion universally entertained by those best acquainted with Major Clark, when wc state that the confidence reposed in his industry and capability is not misplaced. Maj. C. has "been a member of both branches of our State .Legislature, Representative in Congress from this District, for several years past principal Clerk to the Senate, and offici ated as Clerk to the recent Jackson Elec toral College of this State. L. LONG. A. S. H. BURGES, E. H. EURE. To Hon. JonN Branch, n field, N. C. Enfield, April 13?, 1S29. Gentlemen: Your kind congratu lations for the recent honor conferred on your old associate and friend, together with the polite invitation of the citizens of Halifax to dine with them on I hurs day next, merits the warmest tribute of my heart. Hut, Gentlemen, an imperi ous sense of duty constrains me to fore go the high gratification which I should otherwise derive from mingling with friends so uVar to me, around the festive board. In every station in which I have been placed, my highest ambition has ever been to merit a continuance of the pub lic confidence, by a faithful discharge of my duty, r or a few days, -in obedience of his own State, and lie has con tinued almost without intermis sion, in the public service. He has successively served as a mem ber of both branchesof the Legis lature of North Carolina, and fil led the office of Governor for the constitutional term of three years. As chief magistrate of the Slate, he gave general satisfaction, and, indeed, acquitted himself with pe culiar honor. lie has for six years filled the high and responsi ble station of Senator in Con gress; and as evidence of the es timation in which his services in this the highest station in which they could place him, were held by his fellow-citizens, he was, at the last session of the Legislature, re-elected to that office without opposition. The friends of the ad ministration abroad may rest as sured that Mr. Branch's compe tency for the office he now fills is not questioned by any here, ex cept a few of his political oppo nents; and it is hard to belive that they can sincerely doubt the qual ifications of one who has filled the to the dictates of a paramount obligation,' recognised by every generous bosom,! such jjj,, mjished honors. We will only remark, that in this vi cinity where Mr. Branch was "born and bred," and resided until the present time, but one opinion is entertained of his politics, and that is, "he is not, never was, and never shall be a Federalist." First, then, of his qualifications to fill the office to which he has been assigned, wc have not the smal lest doubt. Indeed wc know not that a more judicious selection could have been made. It is true North Carolina can furnish great er orators; but this is a talent by no means requisite for the De partment. Such as are necessa ry, he possesses in a pre-eminent degree. All who know him, in justice, must acknowledge him to be a gentleman of sound republic an principles, and talents of the most useful order, cultivated with an education comprising a thoro' and general knowledge of men & things. These, added to his in corruptible honesty, his unques tioned patriotism, his habits of in dustry and capacity for business, his discretion and energy, amply qualify him for the office in ques tion. Of the high estimation in which Mr. B. is held as a public character, we have the most satis factory evidence. He was called North Carolina is highly hon ored by the present Executive in his appointments to office. We are pleased to learn, that an act was passed at the late session of the Virginia Le gislature for incorporating a Com pany to make a Turnpike Road from Petersburg to the Roanoke River. The last Old Dominion mentions the circumstance, and adds, "Knowing the public spirit of the individuals named as com missioners in the law, and their devotion to the interests of this community, we feci assured, that no time will be lost in commen cing this necessary work, so pro pitious, in every respect to th prosperity of Petersburg and its vicinity." We hope this work will soon be completed, and that a Compa ny will be formed in this State by our next Legislature to extend the Road from the Roanoke to this City. A considerable por tion of it could be made at a smnli cxpencc; and there is no douLt that by straightening the Route, the distance might be considera bly shortened.
