(fJThe Oxford Examiner contains the fol
lowing letter addressed to the Editor of the Ca
lolina (Salibury) Watchman:
Oxford, Oct. 15th, 1832.
Hamilton Jones, Esq.
Sir: In your paper of the Gth inst. it
is stated that Judge Barbour is no longer
a candidate for the Vice Presidency, and
that I had received a letter from him au
thorising such an inference. I know not
who your informant may be, but he has
certainly mistaken the mark widely, for I
have received no letter from Mr. Bar
bour, in which he either declines or inti
mates any intention of doing so, but on
the contrary expressly states that he has
never felt any solicitude on the subject,
and that he is only desirous to do, what
in the posture in which he is placed he
ought to do, for he had never in any way
presented himself to the people for the
appointment that it is a voluntary move
ment on their part without consulting
him, and a matter belonging exclusively
to them, with which he positively decli
ned all interference. Now if this amounts
to withdrawal, then has he withdrawn.
Justice to Judge Barbour and his friends
requires that you make this statement
public with as little delay as possible.
1 have the honor to be, very respectfully,
Your obd't. serv't.

Raleigh, Nov. 2. It becomes our du
ty to notice another diabolical attempt to
fire our city. At about 4 o'clock, on Sa
turday, morning last, a shed room attach
ed to the smoke house of Charles Manly,
Esq. was discovered to be on fire. The
citizens promptly assembled, and, with
considerable exertions, stopped the fur
ther progress of the flames. No fire had
been used near the place for some lime;
and, from the circumstance of a tin cut),
with coals in it, and some xemnants of
light wood, being found under the floor of
the shed, at the spot where the fire origi
nated, no doubt exists as to its being the
work of an incendiary. Star.
The Cholera still continues to exist in
our town but by the following statement
it will be seen that it has very considera
bly abated since last week. The fact
that no new case has occurred for the
last three or four dns, furnishes ground
for the hope, that this disease has nearly
completed its work in Edenton, and that
it will soon cease to be seen amonir us.
Deaths for the week ending Oct. 31, 5;
of which 3 were by Cholera.
