nr o ra! Election on tho qil,j0rt of hohlin Gonventiuii to umund the Constitution. CT'A l!ttor from Washington mentions lh.it ui tho l.iie annual meeting of ihu A incricau Colonization Society, in Wash ington, Mr. Genii Smith madu a vcrf fpiritnd and excellent jspeoch, and con cluded witli a resolution, proposing to the Juends uf the Society to raise immediate ly the sum of S5!),0U0 for the use of the tfocieiy, to be paid in five annual instal ments, and he backed his proposition by mm immediate subscription of $5,000 for his own share. Several similar sums were subscribed by other gentlemen. tt?"Atier a long period of comparative obscurity, we find the celebrated Loren zo Dow n petitioner before the Senate of tli United Stales. We copy the follow ?. from the reports of the National In-t!ligencer:-"iMr. Wilkins said he had petition to present, from a gentleman well known in this country which pre sented that gentleman in a light some what new. The gentleman was one who was very notorious, and had been conti nually going about doing much good all over the land. It seems that the eni Io nian some years ago, had divertedVis at tention from immortal to mortal con cerns, and had invented a medicine for the body, as well as the soul, for which he had taken out a patent. That patent was about to expire, and the petitioner asked that a law (night be passed for its continuation, in consideration of the in sufficient profits be had derived from it. His profits had not been sufficient, in the language of the gentleman himself, to make one hand wash the other. The petition, Mr. W. said, was signed "Lo renzo Dow." On motion of Mr. Wilkins, the peti tion was then referred to the Committee on the Judiciary. India. The Madras Courier of the 20th of August last, states that the poor er class of people of that city, unable any louder to endure the misery consequent on their inability to procure rice, and in tlignaut at the supposed cupidity of the merchants who deal in that article, en deavored on the preceding day, to obtain by force what was denied to their entrea ties, and in several bodies simultaneous ly attacked the bazaars and jjodours; in various parts, and continued their depre dations until a force was ordered out to arrest their progress. The state of linntra is very lamentable. The scarcitv baa made an addition of nearly 100,000 to the population of the place.
