A. LANOFRLL>T, M. A 'l| Rector of St. Luke's Churc To Chamberlain Medicine Co. WASHINGTON LEnER. FCV CHAS. A. EDWARDS. December 15, 19°3- , The people here who are so con 11 fidently predicting the confirmation of Genera] Leonard Wood as Ma ' jor General, either are blind parti sans of bis and can see nothing r del rimental to him and his interests, or reveal amazing credulity or else " have a wonderful foreknow ledge of coming events. If the senate should 1 : confirm this appointment it wov.l 1 r mortgage the Army to injustice » for the next twenty-five years. j Without taking into considera tion the scandal concerning the Jai - Alai franchise and the exorbitant prices paid in Havana for granite ■ to a firm composed of Wood's rela tives, condone the attacks made by j him upon Generals Brooke and j Dudley, overlook entirely his con- j " nection with the ex-convict "Bel-1 > lair," and still the main question remains untouched. By his ap pointment to the regular army I General Wood has already been promoted over the heads of hun ' dreds of deserving officers. Prac ' tically without field experience, he is senior to srch fighting men as Randall, Kobhe, Bell, Baldwin, I Wint, Lee, Carter, Bliss and San ger. It is now proposed to ad vance hini further at the expense ' of Generals Greelv, Brecketiridge, ■ Wade, Ludington, Ainsworth, Bates, • Weston and Sumner. If he is so promoted he would be the head of the Army from 1909 to 1924, and would shut out of that honor every man named, and in addition those * eminent military scientist. Generals • Gillespie, Davis, Crczier and O'Reilly. General Wood may l>e a good pill peddler. He showed some adminis trative ability in Cuba. But as n | field commander his experience is j limited to a few days in a suliordi nate capacity in Cuba ond'to his recent "campaign" agiinst the , Mores, who were "flushed" de | fenceless to his guns like birds at a j battue, aprarently that he might 1 make a "l>ag" to impress the Sen- j ate. For biUiousness, stomach twubles and constipation ihes» t- Tablets have no equal. For sale with Hanna. Hanna could net pfek a fum with Theodore Roose velt now if he tried ever zo hard. The editorial in the Cincinnati Commercial-Tribune, one of the tlu strongest republican organs in the SUte of Ohio, and one of Uan -11 iia's personal organs, which appear ed last Saturday.and which warned the faithful of the republican party that . they would not win with ' Roosevelt as the candidate next year, has set the t >ngues of both 'sets of politicians here ti wagging furiously. It has caused something of a mild sensation coming from | the source it did, and many people affect to believe that it was inspired by Hanna. People on the inside, however, know that Hanna had nothing to do with it. It was simp ly the outcropping of Roosevelt's unpopularity, and many leading democrats who believed sometime ' ago that Roosevelt was the atrong ! est man the republicans could nomi | nate now are very much worried because thev are afraid be will not be nominated. They need not be alarmed. Roosevelt will be nomi nated all right and Hanna knows it. There i* nothing now beyend some miraculous political contin gency that can head off the fixed program. And Hanna will be in the hand wagon if the President has to take a pack rope and clinch him to the front seat. They are scared at the White House—scared and nervous —for fear Hanna may get way, ! and he wont get away if there arc : enough nets to bold him, or unless lie uses an axe. and the President 1 in his present frame of mind will stand considerable mangling be- j fore he lets go of the Warwick | from Cleveland, Ohio.'
