Congressional Nomination in the Sixth
District
May 9, 1904
It seems to be settled that there
will lie a warm contest for the Con
gressional nomination in the sixth
district. There are several aspir
ants for the honor, inciudtujf 9eaa-
ator Brown, of Columbus, and Mr.
Meares.of New Hanover (and prob
ably others) besides the present in
cumbent, Mr. Patterson. Several
gentlemen from the lower end of
the district, who were here last
week, stated that, if Mr. Patterson
does not secure a reuomi nation,
the honor is most likely to be con
ferred ou Hon. Joseph A. Brown,
of Columbus, who is well known
all over Eastern North Carolina as
one of the best and safest men in
the State.
Congressman Patterson appears
to occupy qn anomalous position in
this contest. Although lie has
served only one term, the statement
is made that he will not be able to
secure the vote of his own county
(Roberson) in the coming conven
tion; that at the most he would be
able to secure only a minority of
the votes of the delegates from
Roberson county. If this predict
ion proves to lie true, it is possible
(not to say probable) that Mr
tjrson's name may not be presented
to the convention at all. lam not
personally acquainted with the ex
act «ause of this dissatisfaction,
but atn led to believe that it is, to
a large extent, personal in its char
acter. In order to throw some
light on the subject the following
extracts are taken from an editor
ial in the Lumberton Argus of Ivlay
" Mr. Patterson,' while having
displeased uo one during his term,
yet will (jo into the convention
under peculiar circumstances, as
his friends of two years ago, bav
in* been so bitterly assailed, will
hesitate to press his claims, while
it is doubtful whether those who
opposed him two yenrs ago have
sufficient interest in his return to
take the initiative in securing Rob
eson's vote for Mr. Patterson. * * *
But we doubt the issue, much as
we. are personally attached to Mr.
Patterson. But shall Robeson see
her son led to the slaughter-house ?
If unity demands it, of course Mr.
Patterson will not push his candi
dacy, and just here we would hope
that lie will not allow his name
presented unless he is confident of
at least a majority of Robeson's
vote."

The election of delegates to the

Among the counties holding con

were New Hanover, Iffrnett, Dur

Maj. Stedman will receive the solid

, Harnett if the utii rule is not ob
served. His greatest strength,
however, lies in the Bth and 9th

Gov. Aycock states that he ex

this week for the lease of the A &

plication for a receiver, brought
last week before IT. S. Judge Pur

ing in New Jersey, named Culyer,
ties the lease offers up till after the
hearing, which is set for May 21.
In the mean time the report of the
Governor's investigating committee
is expected to be made. It has
already been delayed much longer
than the public expected, for some
unexplained reason.
Advices received from Fayette
ville, where Judge Peebles is hold
ing a 2-weeks term of Cumberland
county Superior Court, state that
all efforts during the past
week by niiitinl friends to "adjust
the diflerences" between Judge
Peebles and the Robe Son county
lawyers were a failure. It is now
stated til it the Judge will at once
have a 'rule served 011 the lawyeis
requiring tluin to a,.pear lufo e

cause why they shall not be punish
ed for contempt of court. As the
presiding judge is regarded as the
"court," it looks like the conduct
of the attorneys at Lumbcrton was
a pretty pla 11 case of "contempt."
What the "punishment" will 1*
remains to be seen. It is very gen
erally agreed that Judge Peebles
cannot afford to allow matters to
rest lotigsr as they now are.

New York's Hotels.
There are now about sixty first
class hotels in New York, says the
l'ittsburg Dispatch. The addition
of the fifteen new ones will increase
the number to seventy-five. If these
seventy-live hotels were piled on top
of one another they would make a
structure jo stories high—taller
than the tower of Babel; or, to look
at it in another way, it' they could
be conglomerated into one hugo
composite hotel it would be twenty
seven stories high and occupy a
ground space of seventeen aeres,
more than four city blocks, inelud
ing the intersecting- streets. Tim
great building would cost $75,000,-
000, have 2L',500 bedrooms and ac
commodate 50,000 guests daily.
Luck In Politic?.
The late Chief Justice MeCollum
of Pennsylvania owed his election
to a singular accident, He was
nominated for the vacant judgeship
by the Democratic state convention
of 18H8 in .opposition to James T,
Mitchell, the li'epublican candidate.
There was then no chance of bis
election, bat the death of one of the
justices made another vacancy on
the bench, and holli Mitchell and
MeCollum were eho'cii. Lots were
then cast for seniority of rank, as
their commissions were to expire at
the same lime, January, 1!)10, and
MeCollum had the further luck of
drawing the prize and so succeeded
to the chief justiceship.
