Thr Street Commissioner, in
stead of fixing the ditch in tront

up the 12-inch tiling and put in
18-inch tiling, still leaving the
ditch open as it was before. The
waste matter, etc., that goes
through this tiling and stops in
front of Mr. Biggs' is enough
to make anyone sick. We
know whereof we speak. It is
almost impossible for as to stay
in our composing room at tunes,
the odor from this ditch is so
offensive. Still the Street Com

all entreaty to fix this place.

111 C POLITICAL
HONMTRCTCM.
t
(Raleigh Txm.)
f It is only little, more than a
month now until election. A
bout three months ago the na
tional and state conventions
were held and candidates nom
inated to make the race for the
various offices from president
down. So that as to time we
are nearing the three-quarter
pole and will soon be coming
down the home stretch.
And it is here—on the home
stretch —that raM?s are lost and
won. The contest so far has
been a rather uninteresting one.
Only a few people have occu
pied the grandstand, and a few
more have lazily leaned upon
the race track fence. But as
the homestretch is reached
there is a little more ginger
apparent, a wakening on the
part of the spectators, favorite
colors are Hying in the grand
stand, and somebody is getting
ready to give a shout of victory.
So far as the state ticket in
North Carolina is concerned,
wo know who will do the shout
ing. In fact the notes of vic
tory were sounded in the
(irecnsboro convention wheu
Capt. 11. B. Glenn was nouii
najed for governor and the rest
of the stute ticket named. An
other sweeping Democratic vic
tory will be reached in this
state in November, removing
the last vestige of the fusion
regime from office. Two su
preme court justices who went
in during the days North Caro
lina was in the hands of the
Republicans and Populists, are
still there, but will be replaced
by Judges Hoke and Brown
next January.
It is certain that Messrs.
•lolin 11. Small, Claude Kitch
iu, Clias. It. Thomas, Edward
W. Pou, William W. Kitchiu,
G. B. Patterson, Robert N.
Page and E. Yates Webb will
be returned to the national con
gress by handsome majorities.
It is admitted that in the eighth
and tenth districts, where
Hons. W. C. Newland and
Janicß M. Gudger are Ihe Dem
ocratic nominees, and E. Spen
cer Blackburn and H. G. Ew
art are the Bepublican nomi
nees, there is a fight going
on, and the Republicans are
expresing themselves as confi
dent of victory. We are not
willing to admit that they have
ilie strongest grounds for their
chims, but we do know that it
is up to the Democrats to work
hard in those districts. There's
no time to be lost, but every
man in those mountain dis
tricts who desires to see the
solid Democratic delegation
continue iu congress must be
stir himself to"see that every
Democrat registers and votes
for Newland and Gudger
There ifc little doubt but that
the national Bepublican oon
gregional committee has its
eye on the eighth and tenth
North Carolina districts, kuow
iug tiiat there b aii* upheaval
on in the nation, and that their
only hope ia to make a draper
ate effort in every district
where there ia any evidence
ol Democratic disaffection or
a here the vote was cloee
enough two yeata ago to sup
ply possible grounds for the
hope of success by the use of
money or the tempting bail of
federal officea. a thorough
cauvaas of these two districts
is now being made by the can
didates, and other good speak
ers will be heard there before
the campaign closes. The vo
ters themselves, who are inter
ested, must wake up and pu'
on the whole Democratic ar
mor of battle and get into
the fight. With persistent and
detennined ellorts on the part
of the Democrats the election
of Newland and (iudger will
be assured.
Another feature of (he cam
paign most be watched, and
that is the legislative tickets.
Kepubhcansare watching close
ly every county where there
have been local dissensions and
disturbances, no matter what
the cause. There is danger
that confidence in a sweeping
state victory may be the means
of producing local disaster in
some counties Uist are safely
Democratic when interest ia
-ufficient to bring out the full
vote. Don't be deceived. See
that no side issues are iujected
that will endanger the success
of the ticket regularly nomina
ted by the Democratic con
ventions called and held by the
pro|terly constituted authorities
An important and valuable
lesson may be learned from the
getting together of the factions
of the Democratic party in
New York 011 the nomination
of Judge Hernck for governor.
Differences that have lasted a
decade, or aimost a lifetime,
were cheerfully thrown to the
winds in the interest of party
harmony and as a means of in
suring Democratic success A
shining example of parly loy
alty, and a commendable yield
ing of personal views and fac
tional preferences to the more
important attainment of party
unity and success. ,
In the national political are
na the outlook is brightening
every day, and the home
stretch of what har been so far
a quiet race promises to be full
of interest with the chances
increasing for the Democra
cy to win. -
