He expects to have then completed in about 15 days. —Peter Sells, the showman, died * his hone in Columbus, Ohio, Wednesday night of apoplexy, aged 55 years. —President Roosevelt haa desig nated Pint Assistant Postmaster- General Robert J. Wynne as acting Postmaster-General. —Messrs. N.S.Peel snd F.J. Ro buck left last Saturday for New York, where they appeared as wit ■ nesses in the Mutual Reserve Fund Life Association. —Vernon M. E. Church was dedicated last Sunday by Rev. G. F. Smith, Presiding Elder of this District. There was a large crowd present, and the service went off nicely. —Willie Jones, son of Mr. snd Mrs. A C. Tones, who has been in the St. Vincent Hospital at Nor folk for sometime, is reported to be improving. It was thought last week that he would not live * —Mr. Wm. H. Converse, Presi dent of the Converse Bridge Co., of Chattanooga, Tenn., was in town Saturday, Sunday and Mon day. He secured a nice contract from the County Commissioners before leaving. —Messrs. H. W. Stubbs and J. C. Crawford went out to Old Ford Wednesdsy where Mr. Stubbs snd Hon. Dan Hugh McLean address ed the democrats of that section. There wss a small crowd but,never theless, the spnking wss excellent. -Mr. F. J. Robuck, who left last Saturday for New York as witness in the Insurance case, re turned Wednesday evening. While away Mr. Robuck took a little turn through Virginia, Maryland, Dist net of Columbia. Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York. Mr. Robuck reports a de • lightful trip. —The annual meeting of the stock bolder* of the Martin County Tobacco Warehouse Company wss held at the ofice of the Dens is Simmons Lumber Company Wed nesday evening. There were no dividends declared, the earnings of the company woe paid 00 its debts, s. The sane officers were re-elected foe another year. —Messrs. J. W. Watts, J. A. Ted. W. H. Robertson, Jr., Tom Guiganus. Richard Daniels and Mark Collins left Sundsy for Hat teres, where they go to catch wild cattle. While at Hattem a few weeks ago Mr. Watt* bought 200 or more cattle, and he is now doing the cowboy set—rounding them up. C Crawford, of Wil liamston, arrived yesterday after noon with four lpng term convicts from » Martin county for the state's prison? two white and two adbrad. The two. wfaite men were J. Ed. Moore, sentenced to twenty years for murder, and J. O Barnes, sen tenced to ten year* for carnally knowing a little white girl. The negroes were a man and a woman. The latter eras Lettie Rogers, committed to the crimanl insane department' She had as saulted a child. The man* was Will Smallwood, convicted of man slaughter and sentenced to seven teen years. Salsburv present. Dr. U. S. Hassell, Chairman, was absent, be ing on a visit to the St. Louis Ex position. Besides the regular rou tine businen, the following allow ances were made to outside poor: Austin Smith, $2.00 a month; Joe Arnold. $4.00 a month; Willis Chance, $1.50 a month. A contract wss made with the Converse Bridge Co., of Tennessee for s 45-foot steel bridge st Collie's Swamp; a 60-foot steel bridge st the Old Everett Mill, snd the paint ing of Gardener's, Sweeten Wster Creek and Conoho bridges. The contract is to be finished by Dec 1. 19°4- The contract price is $1,950. The bidding was very slow snd uninteresting, sltbough quite s number had gone to the Court House intending to bid on this vslusble piece of property. The highest bid was $7,000,00, and the farm wis knocked out to Herbert Cowen. • _ It is rumored that the price will be raised before the confirmation takes plsce. Mr. H. W. Thi origin of tike fire cannot be account ed for.
