The term ".Southern gentle man" hms a unique significance that is recognized the country over. It is synonymous with every thing that is true, noble and houorable. Indeed the manhood of the South is HO deeply rooted in*honor that it can not even tolerate to see one whom it does not consider a* a friend treated disrespectfully. A happy exemplification ol thi~ oocured a short time ago when Governor Vardaman of Miss issippi aent a telegram to Presi dent Francis, of the St Louis Exposition, which w*h infamous and disgraceful relative to President Roosevelt. Now the South has very recently shown that it does not entertain very friendly feelings tor the Presi dent, yet, when this unwarrant ed insult was hurled at him, even by a Southern Governor the whole South was very quick to rally to the Prsidents relief. • The South has its likes and its dislikes, but it sets the price of gentlemunliness higher than any ties or affiliations. A pi«n to be respected in the South must above all things else be a gentleman. The senate committee is again at work on the Smoot case. The daily Concord Tribune announced some time ago that it would be discontinued on the first of December, but it did not stop. The,people of the town in the meantime hud got together in such a way an to show the publisher thev did not want the daily paper to •top. Doubtless if they had been showing that kind or in terest beforehand there would have been no suggestion of stop ping. A paper mugt hn v e sup port to get along.
