Poultry Letter MR. EDITOR:- A hen is merely an animated machine, and her structure is built, 4 / . . maintained and kept in repair bv "the food elements we supply her. Properly cared for and supplied with food, she maintains herself, makas repairs and converts the raw materia' of food into eggs, and improved duplicates of herself, for •our futurense and profit. Proper food and care will keep every organ and function *.»f her system m per fect heilth and vijjor, and give ns the best possible return- tr our outlay. W-- c no more expect a hen to lav without proper egg producing food, than «ecnu run ait -engine without the. elemeu s to produce steam A of the varieties of f>od that wdl pro duce eggs is v ry to the poultry raiser. Modern breeders have learned how to feed a bal anced rat ion-*-containing all the el ements that the hen neels to sus tain her body, and als > with a view to an abundant egg production. I heard a neignbor say that he liked poultry aud was very fond of eggs, and would enjoy keeping a few hens if he had any place exeept a dry yard to keep them. It is the general idea among people that hens will not lay unless thev have a wide range. A range is all right if one can have it, because the hen then can pick up the necessary «egg elements But with proper know ledge and care one can keep profit able hens on a small lot. In the first place give your hens lime in some form if the lot is bare of it. For about 11 per cent, of the egg is lime. I find ground oyster shells to be excellent for this purpose. It promotes digestion and also fur nishes the lime for the egg. They must have a small amount of flesh in some form, at least three times a week as this is also a very necessary egg-producing element. Ground beef scrap is cheapest, most easily bandied and very much relished by hens. It is necessary for them to have green feed, and for this purpose I sow rye, or pur chase alfalfa m.'al or shredded clover; all of these are rich in egg-producing elements. Wheat, oats, rye and barley are the best grain feed for the laying hen. By uo means feed corn steadily—once a day is sufficient and that should be given at the evening hour. It keeps them too fat and contains very little egg material. We should not neglect to keep a plenty of sharp grit before them at all times. Grit is the teeth of the fowl and it cannot live without a fair quantity. Clean water is another essentia! as -laying lieus are said to drink as often as twenty times each day. The proper care of the hen not only increases "the number of eggs, but the flavor is far finer. Another need for proper feed is the e fleet that it will have on t'le young chickens. They will be more vig orous, grow quicker and be raised easier. The reason for so many inferior chickens is the lack of good food to the hen which produces the eggs. Careful attention- to every detail in this line will bring large profits and much pleasure to the poultry man. » President Helps Orphans Huudreds of orphaus-have been helped by the President of The In dustrial and O r ph an ' s Home at Macon, Ga. who writes: "We have used Electric Bitters l'n this Institution for nine years. How to Teach Arithmetic Miss Krider) In teaching number, as in all other subjects, the method will be determined by the end in view— the results which we hope to gain through our teaching. If we ask ourselves why we teach arithmetic, we may more readily determine how we should leach it. One thing that is most desired by our teach ers is obtaining knowledge. This ts but one of the results to be se cured but it is an important one. Through the arithmetic lessons, the child should gain clear and accur ate knowledge of all the of • umber which are needed in hi?dai ly life, in buying and selling and meeting chli ;atims. A certain amount of knowledge is necessary for getting our dailv bre»d. Then there must be taught the essentials of arithmetic which ate necessary to the future study of mathematics, if the child continues his course in school. If arithmetic is rightly taught the child grow-, through the study In power of observation, power of thought and power of expression. All the primary ideas and truths of number must be obtained through observation; there is no other way in which thev can be learned but the child must also be taught to tbiuk and reason for himself, or his knowledge will not extend farther than his eyes can see. His lesfon in arithmetic should develop the power of clear and definite reason ing. Next he should be taught how to express himself clearly. Through his outward expression is the only way a teacher may meas ure a child's ability. Continued work along these lines will fix in the child habits of accuracy of ob servation, definiteuess of thought, and clearness of expression. ID written work all statements should be clear and straight fpward, all results and processes should be accurate. The kind of lesson which the teacher will give must depend upon the end in view. A lesson to teach a new fact of knowledge will be given in one way, a lesson in tended to fix the fact or to strength en a habit or develop power should be given in another way. This of course means that the teacher must study and decide before every lesson just what truth she wishes to bring out. If the child is to be taught the uew tact that six and two are eight or that fonr quarts make one gallon, the objects must be present ed to him and he must be led to see thei-i relations. If the truth is uew to the child there is only one way in which he can be led to see it and that is by means of objects. The teacher should frequently give reviews and drills to keep the truths fresh in the minds of the children. The lessons should be closely related and each made a stepping stone to the next.
