Poultry Letter So much in the development of a chick depends on it being properly . started that it is most essential to have all conditions prior to hatch ing as nearly right as possible; that is, properly fed hens and the prop er incubation of the egg they lay. It always seems best to remove the chicks from tbe incubator as soon as possible, and keep them in a waini place where they can re maiu quietly, gathering enough strength after their struggle to force themselves from their shells, before they ari ready to remove to the firetes 1 ' brooder. Nothing is better for th : s purpose than a box 12 to 18 iucbes square, according to the hatch, filled to a depth of of four or five inches with cut clover. A nest for the chicks is hollowed in the center of the clover, and after the chicks are pla'ed in the nest they are covertd with a wadded bUnkettwo or three inches thick. This can be placed directly over them, and there will be no danger of them smothering, even though kept from twelve to twenty-four confined. •There should. however, he at • least six chicks batched before placing them in the nest, as it re quires that uumber to develop enough body heat to keep each warm. Any out of the ways that is dry and about 60 de grees, will do to set the box, and it shou'd never be placed to uear a stove or other sources of heat. A bright day will go far to start the chicks right. If brooded out of doors, a few hours of sunshine will greatly lessen the wo:k of teaching them to use their new quarters. It requires some little attention to observe these conditions, but, when systematical'y attended to, consume only time that is well spent. A chick that does not thrive under these conditions will amount to little or nothing, and is not worth saving. It is bes-t, and far more profitable, to spend time bet tering the ( conditions of healthy chicks than to try to doctor those that do not have it, in tbem to pull themselves through If a chick's broodiug-place is clean, dry and wholesome, and they have a little litter as well as dirt to scratch in, the healthy members of the flock will not spend much time outside of the brooder when not busily at work. A healthy chick will seek the brooder when wanting to rest or get wairn, and it can safely be said that the chick that stands out side, possessing little or no activity will never amount to much, and ■slie chauces are that sooner or later it will go down. It is, therefore, of great importance to keep the chicks busy. They should oe giv en a proper place to rtork in, with something to work for, and then it should be seen that they are con stantly on the move, for it is this condition that prompts health and induces rapid growth.—Sel. J , Was Moses an Electrician? It is generally agreed that the acient Egyptians had some know ledge of electricity, but thaj the Israelites had any such knowledge has never been put forward as yet. says The Chicago Examiner. But au engineer of Munich has written an article in a German review to prove that the Israelites wpre elec tricians. Or, at least, if the Israeli tes were not, Moses was. Tbe Munich engineer considers that the Brazen Serpent that Moses set up was noth'ng else than a l'ghtniug couductor, and that the serpents against which it guarded the chil iren of Israel were til. lightning itself. But his most curious # sptculatious are thoe in the Atk of the Covenant, and of the terrible dt-a'.h which menaced manv sacriiig'ous persous who ven tured to touch it. He affirms that the Ark , with its ; metal plates was in reality a huge Leyden jar charged with electricity, and that its discharge was powerful j I enough to kill a tnan. Only the j [ initiated could approach protected by the metalic robes of the priests, which reach down to the ground I and carried off the discharge of 1 electricity ' The engineer quotes manv pas seges from the Old Testament in isuppott of his theory, and it is ' quite possible that Moses who had | learned much of the ot, the I Egyptains, had acquired a knowl ; edge of electricity, which in later | years was forgotten bv the succes- I sor of Aaron.
