] Poultry Letter j 2 MR. EDITOR:— . V I made the assertion in my last w poultry letter that if my neighbor had kept a nice flock # of "thorough- hi breds instead of a lot of scrub hens, 5, she would have more than doubled her profits. Before I commence, I want it strickly understood that I do not believe in the get-rich-quick scheme in poultry I have never found any of these ways. There R do not seem to be any more short S cuts to fortune in the poultry busi ness than in ariv other occupation, d Although poultry falsing is ditier- g ent somewhat from other occupa- p tions, to those who love the work there seems to be a fascination about it, and to them it is a pleas ant recreation rather than tiresome work. Without this love for theL I s feathered pets, we cannot succeed j J to any great degree . I hope how- , s ever, lam not like an old man I 0 knew some years ago. He would • go to town and cross roads stores, f sit 011 tbe steps and boxes and tell j j his brother farmers bow they should c farm and raise live stock, explain- j ® ing the method he pursued in both, j A stranger would have named him f for a successful farmer, but before ! x 1 many years his farm was sold under , a /tnortgage. different earning capa cities in individual hens as in otber animals or even men, whether they are thoroughbred or not. It is up to the poultry keeper to breed, • raise and cull out with a knowledge of what he wants, until he raises ' the earning capacity of the whole flock. But this cannot be accom plished in a day; it requires knowl edge, time, patience, perseverence and careful culling. Iti order tn prove that there is more pro6t iu breeding good stock, I am going to make an example of one individual hen in my yard where there are many others, but none so indus trious as this one. She will be j three years old this fall and the third year of a hen's lite is rarely ever as good as the prior years. This hen has layed ovet one liun-1 dred eggs this year up to date. Tliere were over six sittings of these eggs. Now for hatching purposes, the eggs alone would bring $6 00 She hatched tbe first of March fourteen chicks and raised every one of them. There were eight Dullets and six roosters. I sold the pullets and one rooster for $9.00. This was nearly a mouth ago and I have the five roosters on : hind. The pullets and rooster which I sold are to be used for breeding purposes. The hen has hatched again, this time thirteen chicks. These are nearly .as large , as partridges and have the appear ance of making fine breeders. Now the earning capacity of this | one hen this year will be over]' S2O 00 if nothing happens. If it is | possible tor us to breed and cull out t one hundred hens with a like ca- \ pacity, theu our flock would earn $2,000. Then there would be the t culls that could be placed on the profit sheet.
