The Circus and The Fair
The circus is coming in spite of the
fact that the board of county com
missioners have said they should not
show in the county between the dates
of August 26 and October 2. , Gentry
Brothers are advertising the advent
of their show here oii Wednesday,
September 22,-just five days before
the Koanoke Fair begins on Monday,
September 27.
It is the custom in counties where
agricultural fairs arc held not to per
mit circuses to show within the coun
ty at a date which' Would injure the
fair. .Our commissioners have al
ready passed such an order for this
county, yet it is being ignored by
Gentry Brothers, who say they will
be here with big elephants, hump :
backed camels, fat horses, big show
v agons and pretty girls. They fail
to state whether they will have red
lemonade and the greasy pig; but it
is a safe guess that they will make
Alarms
False alarm* cause much trouble,
especially is this true as to false fire
alarms. It means a rush to perform
a duty on the part of firemen, sub
jecting them to (lunger which always
attends u fire rush. It also bothers
them in the loss of time. It takes
considerable time to get fire-fighting
equipment out and go out to find no
i're -aud then hav* 1 to put all the
equipment back in its proper place.
Another feature about fire alarms,
We Boasted Too Soon
We boasted too soon, according tp
the words of Dr. Edgar W. Knight,
professor of rural education in the
University of North Carolina, who
says that our State is at the bottom
in education and culture and are in
a state of what he calls, "deadly
complacency." He says "much of the
publicity we have received makes ÜB°
appear ridiculous to the world out
side of the South." He further at
tacks the recent book of Dr. Mims on
the "Advancing South," the truth of
which he doubts.

tr.ore on gambling game* than on
door receipts.
It is the duty of county officials to
enforce the commissioners' order and
not allow the show to enter the
county.
It may be that a fair is not always
what it should be; it may have num
erous objectionable features; but it
does have many good ones. Its pur
pose is to help folks ruther than to
"Barnumize" them. On the other
hand, the small circus is a gouging
game from start to finish. It may
offer the opportunity to see a few
strange animals and some acrobatic
stunts that could 'not -otherwise be
sitn by some people.
We understand the town has al
ready granted a license lor the cir-
Cin>, which, however, does not inter
fere .with the county's rights; because
the town is within the county and
not the county Within the town, giv
ing the county the larger jurisdiction.
whether false or not. They always
cause a mad rush of automobiles,
driven by wild drivers, who frequent
ly rush ahead of the firemen and are
often in the way besides driving over
the water hose and other equipment,
causing damage as well as danger.
The town should have more strin
gent regulations against false fire
alarms, also against people rushing
to and from fires. More protection
is very much needed.
He gives some attention to the re
cent statement of Dr. J. Henry High
smith, State inspector of high schools,
for hi» statement that the' "study of
Latin and geometry in the high
•school is a waste of time.'
The county and city school super
intendents get a broadside fire from
the guns of Dr. Knight, who, he de
clares, are content with mediocrity,
which is public education he holds to
be the equivalent of "downright im
morality."
He again says the earliest Ameri
can geographies printed 140 years;
ago said, "Industry is not to be
reckoned among the virtues of North
Carolinians."
Th« entire speech of Dr. Knight is
charged with criticisms of our people,
the very worst thing about it being
the fact that they are in the
main.
We tune ourselves up to the pitch
of thinking ourselves the leaders
among men, yet we have not proved
it in the past. North Carolina, with
the application of the same degree
of intelligence and the same frugali
ty and industry practiced by the New
England States would today be worth
more than all six of them. Some one
has gone far enough to say that the
trouble with-North Carolina is ig
r,trance and laziness, which is the
substance of the charges made by j
Dr. Knight in his speech. -
The idea of education in the minds
of some people seems to be to learn
■ ' to
il way to escape work, and this idea
has proved very disastrous to our
business system. That is perhaps why
Dr. Highsmith is against geometry
and Latin in high schools, which po
sition is just as foolish as it would
be for the lumberman to refuse to
carry the grindstone to the forest be
cause he couldn't cut wood with it.
\et it is highly necessary to take it
for the purpose of sharpening his ax,
which makes him a successful woods
man.
The sluggard who will not work on
geometry and Latin will have a dull
mind when it comes to thinking and
ucing things in a big way; just as
the woodsman will have to work with
n dull ax if he fails to carry his
grindstone to the work.
We-should avoid an education for
pleasure and procure an education
for work, a system that constructs
something new rather than one that
devours that which already exists.
Dr. Knight has brought a very ser
ious indictment against North Caro
lina and its educational practices. It
seems that the only thing to be done
is to plead guilty, bog for mercy, and

New Series of Building and Loan
The nineteenth series of stock of
the Martin County Building & Loan
Association will go on Bale Saturday;
September 4, at the office of the aa
sociati»n here.
Thin happens to be one of the lo
cal business institutions that has
lit-ed and thrived through all of the
business ups and downs of the stormy
past.
History shows building and loan
gssociations to stand at the head of
all others for safety and sure re
turns. It is the finest process for
saving yet found by the business in
vestor. It is the simplest of all forms
of ordinary business deals. The col
lections are made often in small
sums which would generally be spent
in some unseen and probably unprof
itable manner. When put in the
building and loan it immediately
j?oes into good real estate mortgages,
making it always safe. Then the
profits are generally above 6 per
cent with no insurance or taxes, all

The •pecifle virus causing' measles
baa not yet been isolated but It ban
been conclusively proven that the
causative organism is present and
will pass through an exceedingly One
filter. It 1a fouud to be present in the
accretions trom the nose and pharynx
twenty-four hours before the appear
ance of the rasli uud to remain pres
ent a day or two after the rash dis
appears.
Measles is perhaps the moat easily
transmissible of all the contagious
diseases and is contagious from the
beginning of the first catarrhal symp
toms throughout the duration of the
rash. The most Infective period 1»
the first twenty four hours of the tash.
One attack produces an immunity
which in nearly all cases is perman
ent.
The disease ia transmitted either
directly by droplet spray In sneetlng,
coughing or talking or Indirectly
through objects freshly contaminated
by such secretions Outside the hu
uiau body, the virus does not v live long
and contaminated objects under ordi
nary conditions are a» uwmace for a
period not exceeding twenty four
hours.
Persons of all ages who have never
had measles are susceptible bei the
age of greatest incidence Is about six
or seven years Deaths from measles,
however, are In young children, (4
per cent under two years and 90 per
cent under five years of age.
Meaaies at first appears very much
like a common cold except the child
Is somewhat sicker than would be ex
pected. If a child Is sick with an ap
parently severe cold and has a tem
perature uf 101 degrees, measles must
be considered, especially it the eyes
are red and watery and there is a
severe cough. An apparent Improve
ment In he child's condition frequent
ly happens Just preceding the appear
ance of the rash. The greatest dan
ger from measles, especially in the
older children, is from the complica
tions. These are of two general types,
-(1) Invasion of the upper respiratory
tract causing pneumonia, otitis, mas
todltls and meningitis, and, (3) dis
turbances of the alimentary tract caus
ing diarrhoea, enteritis and dysen
tery.
No method of vaccination has yet
been perfected but the use of conre
lescent serum h*s proven very help
ful.
cf which is a great induoement to
the investor.
Another and perhaps better fea
ture of the building and loan is the
fact that it builds home. In any ••om
munity where you find a good live
building and loan association of much
age there you will find more than
half of the homes are products of
the building and loan.
Many of them could not have been
built in any other way. It is the way
of uniting the strength of many
small items to produce some real
worth-while results. The stockhold
er benefits himself and the neighbor
by one and the same transaction.

BELIEVE IN SOMETHING AND
LIVE IT
I have more respect for the vaga
bond who live 6 his life and believes
iii it than the man who lives one life
today and another tomorrow and be
liees in neither. The man who wor
ships an unknown God and believes in
it deserves more respect than he who
does not believe in anything. How
ever, it is far more pitiful to believe
in something and not live it.
The one who deserves the most
sympathy is he who does not believe
in himself. You are your best friend.
Believe in him and live just what you
believe. Do not allow anything to
doubt yourself nor to create in youj
discouragement. Be honest andi
square with yourself. Believe in you.'
Self-doubt will cripple you. De-|
emotions are bad things to
have. Sjelf-pity is an awful .thing.
Don't be sorry for yourself. Know
that you are backed with unconquer
able power. In short, believe in
yourself.
Whatever your hopes, your ideals,
believe in them. Believe in some
thing and live it.
