American Citizenship Department Meeting The American Citizenship Depart ment of the Woman's Club had a very interesting meeting last Thursday af ternoon. E. S. Peel discussed the legal phases and police department of city gov ernment, which is, or should be, the nearest approach to home or family government. The speaker said that law in a town or city Is'nothing more than the in ception; growth, and maturity uf a code of definite pflnciples, meant to require the people to work in such harmony that a majority of the people will gain profits and privileges V ir the common Rood, s0 that each individ ual will not 1 have to carve out alone everything for himself, but that each man walk by the same light and use /'the same street. In policing, the '.aw—the will of the people—has more force than the with the gun practically all the bettor class respecting the statute, u . and those opposed to the law pay lit tle attention to the statute. Mrs. J. F. Thigpen had for her sub ject "Charities and Corrections," both being very important matters in all towns, because there never comes a day when there is not some one in need of charity. It is the duty of those more fortunate to help them Vet the need for correction . is far greater than for charity. It is a deily occurrence to sec people in need of correction. It is the duty of the town to help make good citizens of all people; lor that reason the very best place for correction is among the youth. It is only in the extreme cases where the arm of the law has to be called to correct people. Vet when (he rights of others are assailed, every citizen has to be corrected. W. C. Manning was assigned the subject of libraries and periodicals. The human min£ being so much like a sponge, it absorbs everything which surrounds it, and for that reason the book or the paper that we read should bi carefully selected. It has been said that much valuable space is tak en up with libraries and much good paper wasted iti periodicals. Unfor tunately, there is a possibility of truth in the statement, since the con flict between good and had books and periodicals is goirifr on constantly. The flood of had literature is doing great damage in many cases. The k easy things and the funny things are so appealing that we ure apt' to .fol ic w that course and read fun and trash ri. tlier. than wholesome truth. Fath er*. and -mother*, schools and com munities can not be' too vigilant in establishing the right kind of librar ies and placing the right kind of lit erature before our children. Results of Group K Center Meet at Jamesville (Continued from front page) In Croup II there were conflicting dates in the majority of cases, and i.one of the schools competed. Croup 111, with a larger number of schools than in group 1, gained 44 of the 74 points. Dardens was high ;XiuX!'r in tin group, making 16 points. l\ the spelling contort, Murine Mines, Lilley's School, was first; C. B. Holli day, Dardens, second, and Modie Rob ersun. Griffins, third. Hugh Jordan, ™Tor Dardens, walked away fit the story-telling contest; Floyd Ward, tiritlins, was second; anil Dorothy (oltrain, Wotilards, took third place in'this contest. Velma Griffins, of Grifflns, Coy Griffin, of Lilleys, and Karl Reason, Dardens, competed in 'he arithmetic contest and won in the order given. In grammar-grade reci •tation, C. 14. llolliday, Dardens, took tir.-t place; the second going to Viola Criftin, Macedonia. Macedonia took _ first place in the singing contest, I'oplar Run taking second.
