THE LETTER-BOX DRAINAGE IN HYDE COUNTY Hyde County land being very low, a great deal of draining is necessary to keep it in a condition so that it can be cultivated successfully. Every farm has to have its various ditcher, itltd ca nals. Many of the farms are drained into the Matumuskcct .Lake, front which the water js pumped by one of the largest pumping machines in the worlij into the Pamlico* Soundy. _ • Another phase of drainage in Hyde County al pfessnt, as some-of the cit izens think, is the draining of their purses for taxes. About the only in dustries in the county are farming and fishing. Thefc are no factories, rail roads, bus lines, or anything that can be taxed to help take care of the coun ty's expense Thus it is necessary to tax the fanners and other few and small industries heavily ill. order to keep the county school* open and to take care of other necessary county expenses. • -'•> Still another, and the saddest phase of drainage ill Hyde County, is that it is being drained of its youth. In re cent years Ilydc County has sent more young men and wotnen to colleges in proportion to its population than any other county in the State. A very small percentage of these return to their homes to live after they are edu cated; but, on. the other hand, they go where inducements are offered to Cream u^Tobacco 4 Luckies never cut my wind"says Billy Burch, 2 Americans' 1 iockeyTeam "I can't afford to take S/^^^SSBW^ That's why I sticlc to - . It ffe perfectly natural! I that' they should. What will be the | consequence? Shall County be denie d the splendid citizenship »he has produced and is due? And will the only important industry, tarniing, be left in the hands of the more ignorant and less competent citizens in the years to come? Because Hyde County is mainly dependent on the farming in dustry and because farming conditions apparently offer very little inducements to young people this 'drainage may mean that the results v. ill eventually be disastrous. Hyde County is only an extreme case of the condition in most of the farming districts in the South. It is time for somebody to look into the social conditions of the rural people for the social part is one of the chief factors in keep the youth at home. It is indeed gratifying to know of the club of youiiK men at Jamcsville wlio arc determined to be "better' farmers.
