Tuesday, May 15, 1928 The Traffic Toll Evidently the State, Highway Commission's supply of roadway signs, 'Fatal Accident Here: Killed,' will have to be replenished. The record of traffic accidents for the nine months of the fiscal year shows a loss of 482 lives, or one for each 15 J miles-of the entire sys tem in the State. There were as many as 2,714 ac cidents on the highways during the stated period, and aside from the number of people killed .,308 persons « were injured. And yet these figures do not appall, the' accidents having become regarded as matter-of-fact occurrences. There was one corpse for every five ac cidents. The daily rate of accidents was V.X7 every 24 hours. Every day 12 |>eople were made hospital while at least one case was developed for ' the Undertaker^ The tragedies for May will possibly outnumber any ' previous month. Six people were killed Sunday near | Whiteville when a Coast Line train struck a truck | loaded with Sunday school pupils fcnd five seriously i injured, some of them possibly fatally. This Was one ' . of the greatest traffic slaughters of the entir? year. Facts like these ought to give strength to the hands of the State Highway Commission and to the Caro lina Motor Club, a combined agency in advocate ,of saner highway laws by the next legislature. Who Owns the Highways? Who are the bosses of the highways, the jjeople who build them, or their competitors?. The impression exists that every .penny yet paid for the construction of our North Carolina highways i NOTICE OK SALE Under and by virtfie of the power of sale contained in tlu'. certain deed -of trust executed on the loth day ( of March, 1923, by .1 D Gray and wite,* - Mary J. If that assumption is correct, then why should the property owner or the. railroads kick on State high ways or roads? - .» The roads are intended for but one purpose; that is, to serve the people, yet we are told the farmers are losing thousands of dollars daily in the strawberry sections because Jht trucks from the northern mar ket's can't haul strawberries from this State to Baltic more, Philadelphia, and New York under the licenses of their own States. The law seems/to be very strin gent, but why should it be and who demanded a law that forbids a New York truck owner from coming to a North Carolina farmer and buying his strawberries or peaches or potatoes and hauling them to his own city for sale to the people, at less cost, quicker, and in better sha|»e than thi* Atlantic Coast Line does?. Will this "drastic principle grow until a Norfolk or Richmond truck can't load with a houlteholder's goods in Virginia and haul them to our State? The princi ple is the same; it cuts the railroad out of the freight. if the railroads are not prepared to handle the freight and express of their communities in a decent , way, on quick time, at «r reasonable price, then let the farmers use our good roads Where they can mar ket their highly (lerishable crops quickly, nicely, and cheaply. Don't let the railroads the use of our SIOO,- 000,00 worth of roads, which have not cost them a cent tb build, and for which they have possibly col ! lected $30,000,000 fqr freight hauls. Greedy for China Japan must have a ravenous ap[>etite for China, be i cause she never fails to bite out a slice of China's territory whenever the opportunity presents itself. China has for a long time been a coveted nation, at least three of the leading nations of the world seem to want to acquire her territory with her 400,000,000 people and fine lands with its natural resources. Now, China is asking the I'nited States to assist her. Jf it was not for the United States and England Japan would have China before Sunday night, and doubtless if Japan and the I'nited States were out of the way, China would soon be included in the United Kingdom of Gr.eat Britain, Ireland and China. The p -ople of China are ! aving a hard struggle; first they are attempting to transform from the old I to the new civilization and are being sold out by their I leaders and robbed and taxed on every hand. China l could easily stand all her internal troubles and Would | I finally overcome thenr. Yet China will have almost I an .unbearable task to overcome her internal pilefring ' and carrying the heavy burden of unfair trade bal ances imposed upon her by the nations that dominate her, which we call and claim to be the highly civilized patinrta - - .» As things now appear, no nation will be permitted " to take any more of China's territory without bring ing us another great war. Neither civilization nor religion have put all the jealousies nor selfishness out of the people to that extent that the while and yellow races regard each other with the same luve and respect as they do them i selves. | crty being located in a store owned | by Jos.
