PAGE SIX THE LETTER-BOX C. D. CARSTARPHBN. SR. No more radiant spirit ever winged its flight into the serenity of peace and paradise than that 'of C. D. Carstar phen, sr., who fell asleep on the fore noon of May 4th, 1929. On November" 23. 1870, during the dying hours of the nineteenth cen tury he was born in the town of Wil liarnston. N. . C., being the youngest yon of the late W. H. and Mary Car starphen, and lived here all of his life. On the brink of his young man hood he chohc to follow the mercan tile business and continued to the end, and am proud to state that it terminat ed a success. He was indeed a good business man, a good citizen, a true public servant, a loyal friend, and a devoted father and husband. I would feel recreant to the memory of a life long friend if I did not avail myself of the opportunity to publicly pay my most humble tribute him. How feeble are words at a time like this We think in the inspiration, of a great occasion, or when enthusiasm runs rife we can command the proper words to express ourselves, but could we call | upon a limitless vocabulary, in a time, of sorrow like this, when we try to | «]eak or write about our friends, j v. crds seem inadequate to portray our j ic-elings >of bereavement, sympathy, ami appreciation. However, as one who loved and admired the departed, to desire to add one word of apprecia tion for the beauty of this life and for j the opportunity that I have had of he- ' ■tig one of his friends, and being able ( to call him my friend. I shall carry with me and shall ever remember with ; the greatest of pleasure the kindness, ! • the sympathy, and geniality of his i sotft. But he has gone, and he needs l no word of mine to endear him to 1 >ou, or for him to have the place he ; rightfully occupies nr both the town and county A fatal malady sorely afflicted him. ; but unafraid and without complaint he j bore his suffering bravely. He had I fully realized that the end was near, without complaint he bore his suffer- i ings with a smile. His last scene com-, ported with the whole tenor of his life. not a sigh, not a groan escaped him, and with undisturbed serenity lie closed his well-spent life., Such was the man that our town and county . now rfiourns. I recall with the last, luuv I saw him, fust three weeks' today ln~s devoted-wife and children invited my brother Alonzo arid myself to go with them and pay hini a visit where lie was Confinrd at St. Vincent's Hospital. We arrived | and found him in a cheerful frame of mmd. and tittle did 1 dream that the ! end was so near We spent most of the day and left him with smiles, and lit seemed to enjoy our visit so much, and for us all it terminated a most de » lightjul one. Oil our return, his de voted wife was not altogether satisfied with his condition, and remarked to us all that Charlie was mighty feeble hut. like him, he tried'to hide his feelings In his passing both the county and town has been bereft of one of its best citizens, and he will be sadly missed in many ways -Ai the time.i 4 4 his passing, he was up. county trea* I urer, and as good a one as the county I ever had —he reflected credit, and we all shall ever feel proud. He was both | nominated and elected by a huge ma | jority during the year l'X)8 "Since that j time he was continually reelected with out opposition. He was also vice pres ' irient of the Farmers &, Merchants Bank of this city, and rtas regarded I as one of its biggest assets He possessed an evenly balanced, level-headed temperament, and could not be confused or' rattled. He was honest, sincere, charitable, congenial, a good mixer, and a Christian gentle-1 nun. He possessed the highest type of citizenship. A true friend, a typi-1 cal Mason, and a loyal and .-devoted j father. He possessed that wealth | which is the immemorial heritage of j those who have realized that God- is I Kood, and the world worth while. He j knew the love of home and children— the real love. His record As a man. a citizen, and public servant is with- S out reproach. He always held close t to his family, his friends, his church, I TORTURING PAINT Canfc Ud r Tab H» Sk WM Uaable TA Ffal Aay- Amf Relieve Thai Utffl She Took CM Oendo. W. He has goni, a coffin, a winding sheet, and six feet by two .ftf mother earth, and precious memories are all that .is, left-4jf our friend and loved one. Let us rejoice in the hope that he now swings to and fro on angels' wings around the throne of God. We (hall never/Set his jovial spirit again and hear his laugh, always found in a good mofed, ever fu)l of fun, and ready for .. good laugh. Some writer has said that laughter and love and hope and happiness are the companion* itfr-p|eas nre. the patrons and allies of civiliza tion, the handmaids of religion, the evangels of God. They are the guar dian angels of every Christian home, the guiding star of every nation's des tiny. They fondle the child in the cradle, they linger . with frolicsome youth, they minister to struggling manhood and soothe the pillow of age. There comes a time in all of .our hves when wo must part with Ifrved ( nes who have been near and dear ,|t> lis. God in His wisdom saw fit to sound taps and dall to the colors, our friend and loved one. lie has passed away from the busy life i l if turmoil and strife to rest in peace. No word of mine can bring him back attain, nor can I bring much comfort to the sor rowing loved ones left behind only to say that we do have the promise of Him, our Heavenly Father, that soifte day we will be united once again with those who were ever near and dear to us in earthly life. He waited rev erently, hopefully, for the summons to him to join some of the loved ones gone before in some star that js now shining with luster in God's illimitable wildernesses of Worlds. Great Nature, the common mother, now holds him tenderly in her bosom, and at the awakening may he greet j the morning in a land where there is no night; where the skies are unditn med by a cloud; where the feet lilted | upon no pathway of stones, and where i the head wears no crown of' thorns. J If it be God's will, may He sjiare the loved ones many more years, and when their earthly pilgrimage lias end ed, and they l»aw-»«issed over to that unknown shore, that they may find him reverently, hopefully, patiently, and anxiously waiting to welcome each and every one of them iiifo that' Beautiful I sic of Somewhere. * Til !• i > HASSELL.
