Tuesday, May 21, 1929 * North Carolina Schools The North Carolina taxpayer pays $32.10 per year for each pupil in school. The average cost per pupil in the United States is $64.59., a little more than twice as much as in our own State. North Carolina rates high in the number of pupils in school. Where 28 1-2 per cent of the population of North Carolina is in school, in Georgia the/ per centage is -23 per*. cent, Virginia 22 (>er cent, and in New York only 20 per cent. This alone is one of the most encouraging things we sec -our people are going to school. We fall down in length of term as compared with most States. Our average is 140 days, while in New York the average is 185 days. We need several changes in our schools. First, we need longer terms; second, we need an even distri bution of tax burden on all kinds of wealth to sup port our schools, and if we set that, nobody will be overtaxed. South Carolina Shows the Way K Of the three States, South Carolina has l>eat North Carolina and Tennessee ;. long way in settling her labor troubles. The first thing tin- governor of Tennessee did was •to rush soldiers to tht nulls." Out governor did the rime .thing. But neither did very much to try to make a fair and teasonable settlement. In South Carolina the authorities followed differ ent tactics. They said the strikers were human beings who had done service., for many years while suffer- Workmen's •Compensation Act EFFECTIVE JULY 1 I will be glad to furnish all details and ex plain^thoroughly. « Get Posted on the Coverage Early Every Employer Is Affected John L. So the officials advised the owners and workers to come together and find what was right. They soon found a way, whereby the laborer is to get more pay, and liotn the mill owners and the laborers are satisfied. The N'urth Cardfcpa and Tennessee strikes are still unsettled, wilh-Ktwr claiming their right to higher wages anil owners trying to starve them out. As good as we claim our North Carolina govern ment to I*, it is still a long way from perfect. Taxes Not To Blame for All Our Ills j * Martin County citizens took the proper step Fri day when they took a stanrf against drastic cutting of the teaching force of th* county. Under the new law, 28 teachers may be cut out of the white schools, and about the same number from the colored schools; but the county may adopt a plan whereby only 5 teachers will be lost from the gram mar grades of the white schools, and possibly 4 high school teachers, and about the same number of col ored teachers. The meeting was almost unanimous in choosing the plan which would cut out the fewest number of teachers. ' • v This will mean a cut in the school cost of several thousand dollars, and at the same time a lowering of the schools''efficiency. There will be several other small items- saved in various places and ways, which will reduie taxes some in the county. Of course, we need great economy and high efficiency in our school system, but we must have as good a system as we now have, and we need much better schools. It is unfair for a nation of people to constantly curse taxes and lay ail their troubles and failures to the payment of taxes, when any reasonable man knows that the financial ills of this country today are caused by extravagance. We are supporting the most extrav agant generation that* America has ever produced. We see nobody walking- all are riding fast in fine cars; nobody is ragxed, and few folks are straining themselves at work. Vet we seem prone to-charge .taxes With all our ills. 'V The danger point is that the people may destroy - their schools in a lit of desperation rather than give up some of their pleasures. v_. —l No Farm Relief This Week Farmers will have to go to their own smokehouses and corn cribs for at least another week, localise the Congress will not lie able to pass a farm relief bill before then.
